Looking at 2010-2011 Cx-9 - Your thoughts

I currently own a 2012 Sonata Hybrid that I enjoy but I'm at the point in my life that I need more cargo space and that is taking precedent over milage. Being a big guy, I don't fit into many SUV's (not enough shoulder space) but I do fit confortably in the Mazda CX-9. My budget is around 18-20 thousand and in the Chicago market, that can get you a 2010 or 2011 CX-9 nicely appointed.

Is there anything that I should look out for? What has been your experience with the CX-9? If you were going to do it all over again, would you buy the CX-9 or some other SUV? Would appreciate what you think about this.

I've had my '10 since new, and now have a little over 46000 miles on the clock. With one exception (gas cap light) I've had no trouble, nor reason to regret the purchase. Mine is the Sport model so fewer goodies to quit. I am 6'6" tall and about 244 on the average day; and a 34" trouser inseam. There is plenty of room for me. Now to me, Godzilla is a big guy (is it a guy?) so if that's big to you - you may have to cut the top off. I don't push the car, but I do like a little zoom zoom, an d I probably brake harder than the average driver. I am just now noticing a tiny pulse on an intermittent basis in light to moderate braking. (I have replaced three tires, however, two of them were sidewall punctures). Mine is a 2 wheel drive - unlike the Chicago Metro area, it snows in San Antonio about every 15 years, and we don't get stuck, because we are paralyzed! We do get a lot of rain (or we used to) and I will say this is a very good vehicle in the rain. I came to the CX9 from a Ford Expedition, and have never really felt I had to cramp a load. So hope that helps - I will say if trading today I would be looking at another one. My only gripe is the discontinuation of my Stormy Blue Mica. Finally, I believe that the CX, in it's category, for the money spent, cannot be beaten. Now go get your car, and post a picture! Chuck

I have a 2012 CX-9 Grand Touring that I purchased new in 11/2012. I had narrowed it down to the CX-9 or a new Acura MDX (for $8k more). I chose the CX-9 and would do it again in a heartbeat. The interior design, huge cargo area and 2nd/3rd row seating flexibility and comfort were among the reasons the CX-9 won my favor. But the handling and overall performance were what really sold me on it! It is surprisingly quick, the 6-speed automatic is the best I've ever experienced and the handling is more like my 2014 Mazda6 than a Crossover/SUV.

My CX-9 looks, feels and drives like it did the day I bought it. I am also a pretty big guy (6'2" and 240#) and the driver's seat is very comfortable for my frame. Based on the reliability data reported by Consumer Reports and TrueDelta.com, the CX-9 is very reliable overall and especially in comparison to most other Mid-size/Large Crossovers and SUVs!

The CX-9 was originally introduced as a 2007 model but received a significant cosmetic 'refresh' for 2010. The updates included a new front-end design including new headlamps and fog lights, new taillights and larger exterior mirrors. The interior got a new steering wheel design, new leather seats in Touring/GT, revised center console design and trim and 'active' headrests on all models. The optional Bose audio system was also updated with a new color 4.3" display with integrated backup camera. For 2011, all models got new wheel designs and speed-sensing automatic door locks (which can be deactivated).

Hi,

I bought a new CX-9 GT fully loaded minus the DVD in Dec 10. We had the following issues:
- Driver seat frame was loose so seat was shifting. Dealer replace frame and all railing and it's now fixed
- Heated seat passenger side stopped working. Took it in, they fixed it and it wouldn't stop heating. There was a recall due to a short in the wiring. How come it wasn't caught when the fixed it the first time, go figure.
- Power Lift gate: opened it and would come back down. insulation from rear fender got caught in the gear system of power lift gate. They fixed it without issue.
- Front wheel bearing driver side was gone at 72 000 Km.
wait it's not done...
- weird feeling coming from under the car: felt like driving over rumble strips. and always around 60 KPH in 5th gear. Since it was just after the transfer case issue, the lifted the car and realized the AWD was not kicking in. Blamed the transfer case and changed it under warranty. Picked up the car and voil! issue still there. Mazda Canada said to reprogram the computer, didn't work. Flush the transmission, didn't work. Change the spark plugs (at my expense), didn't work. Finally they put a new transmission on. Was working fine until a tornado hit our area and scratch all the driver side. Was in body shop for 2 weeks. Got it back Friday night.
- Drove to the beach Saturday, try passing a car on our way back and car start stuttering with check engine light blinking. Went away.
- Again Sunday morning when I took it in for an oil change. FML!!!
So the guy at Pro Oil Change look up the code, misfire cylinder #2. He reseted the code but there is still some stuttering when accelerating with blinking engine light.
- To top it all, felt like there was an ocean in my car while I was coming back. Every time I was turning left, wave sound. Clogged AC drain. Fixed it with a can of compressed air.
Always had amazing service from my dealership and love that car. It's a great ride, super comfortable on long ride and enough power. I'd buy another one for sure but with extended warranty. 3 000 km until mine is all out of warranty .
