Live traffic updates?

But it sucks so bad. Last weeks snow storms, google maps showed each road solid red (barely moving.) Tomtom updated to say 45 minute ride with an extra 5 min delay. Took me 2 hours. Some roads were even totally stopped in a standstill because of accidents and it had no clue.

This is my biggest complaint on the gps and the reason i bought it to have accurate traffic info and guide me on the best roads to and from work. It doesnt do that for me.

Agreed, I am buying a dash mount for my iphone and using google maps from now on, I regret shelling the extra money out for the nav unit, when it worked it was fine, but the voice control is garbage and the safety locks are infuriating.

I actually think the traffic updates are quite accurate even when I compare it to Google Maps. This is in NYC as well. I guess the effectiveness is largely dependent on location.

Traffic updates are good when:-

1) It works

2) When your dealer finally agrees there is a SIM card inside, and this is not the SD card.

I had free traffic for the 1st 3 months. Found it invaluable. Renewed 1st December at 55. First journey taken after update M6 was closed all day, there was no warning on the radio before I was due to join from the A556, but the TomTom identified the issue, plotted a new route and saved me sitting at Knutsford for several hours. That one episode paid (in my opinion) for the annual renewal.

Mid February live traffic suddenly died on me. Had been a bit hit & miss, but I blamed that on the vagaries of the cell-phone network.

Went through the tests on the screen, found all was gone regards Live Services, screens greyed-out and the signal bars for the Sim-Card greyed-out as well.

Phoned my dealer & he tried to suggest I carry out an SD card update, but had already been done by me the day before. I explained the issue was probably around a Sim-Card issue, but he was having none of it as he tried to tell me I was confusing a Sim-Card with an SD card. I explained I had a fleet of vans with trackers, and they all use Sim-Cards, I knew this because I had replaced them myself about a year ago. I tried to explain further that is how the device receives & sends back reports. He talked to me as if I was stupid!

I called TomTom, spoke to a nice young lady in Amsterdam (English was her mother tongue) She talked me through all I had already tried for myself, and agreed there must be either a Sim-Card or unit problem, she e-mailed me a case report, (which came into my Samsung Galaxy whilst I was on the phone to her) She advised me to send this e-mail to my dealer & arrange an appointment to have the unit replaced. She also confirmed that there is indeed a Sim-Card on the Vodaphone network

So, I phone dealer and he tells me I have to take the car in for investigation. I explained the history and TomTom conversation as well as forwarding the e-mail, but he insisted I still need to call in and leave the car for a whole day. I was not happy as it was patently obvious what the trouble was, and all he needed to do was simply order a replacement unit. He promised he would get the service manager to call me back; that never happened!

Next day the dealers salesman phoned me at home asking to speak to my wife, as her Mazda 2 was coming up for 3 years old I guessed he was about to try and sell her a replacement. Big mistake on his part as I let him have it about the events of the day before & that I was promised a phone call. He apologised and advised I will get the call later that day.

After about 2 hours, I get the call from the service manager, he like his predecessor tried to tell me I had mistakenly called the SD card a Sim-Card. Again he was not having any of it regards my suggested procedure & actually told me he cannot go by what a customer tells him, but by what Mazda says. I offered a compromise that I would take the car along for him to look inside, so he could suck through his teeth and tell me what I already knew. He didn't like that and advised he was not prepared to do that I must leave it there all day.

I had to capitulate & wait over a week for this appointment, leave the car on site, only for him to tell me exactly the same as I had told him over a week before. New device ordered!

I am now at their mercy as to when they get hold of the replacement unit. Will be interesting to see if they managed to keep my latest edition and to make allowances for the break in service as I will need the live traffic service to be extended by the period of inactivity. That will be fun.

The car is brilliant, TomTom not so good but my experience with my Dealer sucks!

Nizzy. Just read your post.

I did see in other postings that there seemed to be no option for the traffic facility in the US. If you saw how damn crowded our roads are in the UK then in this country, a valuable tool.

I know by experience that in a lot of other countries I've visited the roads are lovely and quiet, except Italy. Canada for example and Vancouver island, it is a pleasure to see smooth flowing traffic, even in the cities.

Trouble is like any "luxury" you get used to it. Imagine a car where time had stood still for 25 years. Only in-car entertainment an a.m. radio. Manual windows. No Air-Con. No intermittent wipers. No adjustable steering wheel. The list goes on & on.

Will update when TomTom sorted.

I find that the traffic reports of the CX-5 is similar to the one in the BMW. Perhaps both run the same frequency? It also happens to be a 335d by the way :)

Traffic updates are hit and miss based on where you are and what system you have. I haven't had the CX-5 long enough to know about the traffic in it, but my Garmin sometimes finds stuff that isn't there or is long gone. Sometimes it misses traffic problems that have been there for hours. If you want good traffic, try Waze, a free app on Android and iOS.

Update. Dealer had the vehicle in for a day and says replaced the unit. Typically it decided to work again the day before, but I chose not to tell the dealership.

So I'm not too sure if he actually did replace the unit. Perhaps I'm being cynical.

Today, not working again. I get no bar on the right, and I have what looks to be an antenna display in the lower left side of the screen. This seems to be a feature every time the live traffic fails totally.

Not happy as once again I will be stuck in a loop between TomTom & Mazda who no doubt will each blame the other.

My traffic updates have been up and down (mostly down) for about 2 weeks now. During that time I've followed the various troubleshooting guides from Tomtom. When this happened before, going into the settings and re-enabling information sharing sorted it (it does seem to forget sometimes). This time round, no such luck. I've also done the most recent update to 10.817 software and that's done nothing either. I'm at the point now of entering into the battle with Mazda/Tomtom to get it sorted, but don't want to be pushed between the 2 as others have been.

CX-5 is a great car, but badly let down by the satnav quality.

I just discovered that every time you update the software, you need to go back in and reset the traffic option.

And traffic issues report fairly well when it works, but delays due to weather never seem to post. I use the beat the traffic application in addition to the TomTom and the combo works well. In bad weather, I also check radarnow to gage how the weather is progressing. I have never found one source that does it well, including google maps (which is terrible in KS for some reason).

Update on mine, Mazda NB-1 no live services as per earlier posts.

Unit was replaced 11th March as no live services. Failed again 30th March.

As it is an integrated unit, and as per Mazda regime I have to take to car to the dealership for their assessment before they can even order a replacement unit. Have done that, and went back today to have yet another unit fitted.

Dealership replaced the unit, and immediately failed >> No Live Services <<

This means yet another trip to the dealers, and to sit in reception whilst they go through the whole procedure again.

Including the factory fitted original, the next one will be unit number 4.

At least TomTom has listened and will be offering me an extension of services, but this is frustrating as well as inconvenient.

Mazda are no longer In denial I suspect as my issues have been well documented with their UK customer service dept.

I feel sorry for the dealership on this one as they are as fed up as I am.

When you say no live services, you mean in the menu you only see the 3 options for services instead of the 6 or so that you would normally see?

Has the sim card been replaced, or has the original been reused?

Four units sounds like there's another problem to me, not that I know as much as you, about the system.
I was a maintenance technician (electrician) for 25 years, and no way would we replace something 4 times, twice maybe.

Seeing one working in another car, and fitting that one would eliminate the unit, or not.
