Left foot braking - do we have a solution yet?

I can't stand my car practically dying every time I drive like an asshole. Er... I mean... Has anyone figured out a good way to disable the intrusive brake override system? You know - without getting check engine lights and annoying beeps and all that.

The best solution I've found is the ECU flash that Andres is using. But he posted a gain of something like 1 horsepower; spending $500 in order to left foot brake and a negligible gain in power is not money well spent, in my opinion.

Are there any other solutions? Thanks :)

Mine did not overruled that after all, still does it. BTW I like the way you make it look like my car did not gain anything with the tune, look at the graphs to see the real gains..

Hey, my apologies. I looked for the graphs and I can't find them. But this was said more jokingly than seriously. ;)

That's a shame. For some reason, I thought I read that it took care of the brake override system... :(

Does anyone know of any method of dumping the ECU firmware/ROM and reflashing it? I mean obviously it exists (see Dynotronics, Piasini), but are there any publicly available methods? I'm not an ECU expert by any means, but I am a seasoned software engineer. I'd really like to take a look.

My understanding is that these traditional ECU-flash-based tunes only edit constants stored in lookup tables in the ROM. Something like disabling the brake override system may involve actually modifying logic, unless there's some constant we can tweak.

The ABS and TCS functions are in a seperate control Module from the standard ECU/PCM. You'd have to find a way to hack that and go from there. There are some aftermarket units out there for a variety of different models, none for the 2 specifically, but that's not to say some of the coding is not the same. The Fiesta has a Ford Racing ABS unit available. I have not tried it in the 2, nor have I heard of anyone trying it, but Mazda does use a lot of Ford parts in its ABS system, so it "may" work.
Have you tried the both feet down accel and brake pedals, hold them both down and turn key on, keep holding pedals down for 10 seconds and release pedals, start the car. You will now be able to left foot brake the car without having a throttle cut. To reset this, turn the car off and it will default back to stock. You will have to re sequence this every time for turn the car on to disable the throttle cut. For autocrossing, I don't even bother with the defeat anymore, the stock mode gives you up to 2 full seconds of tandem pedal operation which is more than enough for a standard autox course.

Have you tried the pedal override thing?

1) Turn key to "on" (not start, not ACC), which is where the dash indicators all come on. Now pause for a couple of seconds for most of the lights to go off
2) push both gas and brake to the floor
3) Wait 15 seconds, just to make sure...and I have a timer running on my phone to get it right
4) release brake and gas, push clutch, start car
5) Turn TC off.

Interesting to note that Asia-made 2s don't seem to have the brake override, tried left foot braking on the highway a few times didn't bat an eye to it at all, though all we get is ABS and EBD, no TC. Maybe you could source an ECU from one of the 2s found here? Or maybe brake override is handled by the TC system?

I finally got this to work! The key seemed to be to have the shift lever in neutral/out of gear. I always shift into gear when I park my car, and just couldn't get this process to work any of the times that I attempted it. I tried several times today, and the last time thought to try with shift lever in neutral. And it worked!

Rally mode ON!!

Great, but did you have to do it again after you turn the car off?

Thanks

If the car is turned off from the on mode on the key cylinder, you need to redo it. If the key is left in the on and you happen the kill the motor, just start it again and drive off. Tested both several times
