Key fob stopped working even after battery change

Hi. Got a 2017 CX-9.

I went out and as I pressed to lock after exiting the vehicle in the parking lot, I noticed nothing happened. Anyway, when I was done, got back in the car and went to the store. When I went to restart after I was done at the store, the ignition button would light green and the screen would turn on, but the car wouldn't start. I tried a few times over next 30 seconds and it finally started.

I figured it was a battery issue so I popped in a new CR2025 and the fob is doing the same as above. I took out the key part out of curiosity to see if it would lock/unlock the door. Have never actually tried that before. Anyway, I think I turned it right and the horn started beeping. It was at 8am in my driveway. Had to rush into the house to get the other one to shut it up.

I also took the battery out of the other/functioning fob and tried it with this one. Nothing.

Anyone had this problem before? I've never had to reprogram a fob before but does it sound like I need to do that? I also don't want to do something to cause the horn to beep as it's still only 8:30 here at the moment.

Double check that you got all the innards of the fob in the correct spot and the battery in the correct side up. If all that is OK, and the buttons aren't jammed with dirt or lint, it might be time to go to a locksmith for a new fob. A locksmith can likely supply & program a key fob for much less than the dealership.

I don't think it is related to your problem, but worth mentioning you need a CR2032.
The CR2025 is thinner and may make no good contact.

Edit: I later realized that the CX-9 has an "old style" narrow key fob that uses a CR2025 battery.
The CR2032 is used in the more square key fob of the newer generations.

Thx for the idea.
I will look into that but also ask the dealer what they say.

Okay so the dealer told me some bonkers price to replace the whole thing and the programming. I'm talking like $900 CAD. I got quotes online for like $300 to $350 plus tax.

However, dealer also said to bring it in for a quick look. He changed the battery and it's been working since. No idea what happened. I tried a new battery, which was from the same pack I got two years ago when I changed the battery on the other fob. I also put the battery from the working fob into this one and that did nothing. And yes, it was installed the right way up and it was the right kind (CR2025). He put in a different brand of battery and it worked right away.

As inexplicable as that is, my number one crazy story was when I had a 2006 Fusion. One day when I got to the train station I went to unbuckle myself but it was stuck in the latch. I had to wiggle my way out. I drove with it stuck for a week by sitting on top of the stuck seatbelt. Then one day when I came back from work, the seatbelt magically had returned to its correct rolled up position and I kept using it for the next 10 years without issue.
