K04 Smoking... Thinking of GT3071R upgrade

awesome..hopefully this turns out good we could use some good news with these turbos around here instead of everyone blowing up.

Yea hopefully... I think people just get a little to anxious with these turbos and boost the hell out of them and in return blow their motors. I am still waiting for a good tuning solution though. The xede might be my choice within the next few months...

I'm running an XEDE w/PnP from PG with their base map(s) loaded for now and it is working just fine...

let me know how those other maps work out for you when the 3071 gets on there.

for future reference, we offer the standback in plug and play as well as the xede.
 
Finally done with the install... I had a few problem during the install with modifying the oil return line but Ken over at PG def. helped me out with that.

I am trying to just break in the turbo for now and not run it to hard for now.

I want to send my best regards to PG and Ken for their outstanding service and help throughout everything. PG has my business from now on.

Rebuildt K04 vs GT28/30

I'm new to this site and to tuning, and hope someone can help me out by answering some questions. I have a mostly stock 2007 MS6. Only upgrade so far is a cat back REMUS exhaust. I have ordered a new DP with hiflo cat and plan to get an inlet pipe and a better TMIC, while keeping the original Air Box and filter to keep turbo and BOV sounds down.

I would like to get better drivability and response for daily use. I do not plan to drag race, do track days or any thing of that kind.

It appears that some people have descovered that they have a defective turbo when swapping DP. I am a little worried about installing a DP, on the other hand there is no point riding around with a defective turbo.

I see that swapping out a smoking stock turbo with a GT28/GT30 is proposed as an option to hassling with dealers about warrwanty issues. An other option (cheaper?) is to rebuild the stock K04 turbo.

-Will a rebuilt K04 solve the smoking problem (for "ever")?

-How does a rebuilt K04 compare to a GT28? (in terms of spool up, drivability and power vs. price)

-Does a rebuilt K04 or GT28 work well with the stock ECU and stock boost level? (in terms of reliabilty and gain)

-What can I expect with the above mentioned mods (DP with hiflo cat, new TMIC, new inlet with original air box and rebuilt K04/GT28 in terms of response, torque and hp?

-Which TMIC is recommended? (I see they range from $500-1200...)

-Should I consider lowering the boost level to ensure reliability and how is that done?

-Are there other mods I should consider, keeping in mind that response, drivabilty and reliability are most important, not peak power?

my technicians say yes

cheaper, faster spool up, but less peak power potential than the GT28

yes it does

the GT2871 will spool much like stock but have more peak power. if you run stock boost levels i would imagine 40 to 50 hp gain. hard to say without tuning.

if you were buying today it would be ETS. we have something else coming

getting rid of factory wastegate control and setting the new wastegate on the GT series turbo to a lower boost setting

-Are there other mods I should consider, keeping in mind that response, drivabilty and reliability are most important, not peak power?

bypass valve, cold air intake, motor mounts, tuning solution
 
You can run the gt3071 on the stock ecu.....but you would have to use the atp fuel cut defender or 5v map clamp. That will suffice until you can obtain EMS.
