(mswerd) I go to a local place called Maz-Tech for alignments, they ask me if I want to hang out and watch them work (I do).

I try to do as much as I can myself, but when I have to bring it in to get checked out or fix something cause i dont have the time. I stand right outside the bay were they are working on my car and keep an eye on them like a hawk. 1hr to 2hrs, i dont care. I want what I payed for, and make sure they do it.

One time I went to a local place to get 2 new tires installed, mounted and balanced, and also an alighnment. I stood outside and watched one of the mechanics mount and balance the tires. Then I went inside purposly and watched through the glass they have in the lobby to the bays. After the tech put the tires on, he pulled my car out, went inside and gave the guy upfront my keys and said "she's all set".

The guy at the front desk then proceeded to show me the bill for all the work done, including the alighnment.
I told him that the tech didn't even put my car on the machine to do it. We argued back and forth and finally got the tech in the convo and I asked him if he alighned the car. At first he said "yes Im sure I did". I then told him the whole time I was watching him and he never even attempted to bring it to the alignment machine after mounting the tires. I asked him again an then said "no I didn't". So then I told him I want it done free of charge since they were about to charge me for work they didn't do. So they pulled it back into the bay, me keeping watch. They did the work and Iv'e never gone back their since. I

ts funny also when they tell you " OH, when was the last time you had this done, or this is broken, you need to fix it now for the low low price we can give you of a gagillion dollars. But you know nothings wrong and call them out on it. Priceless when they deal with a customer who knows what they are actually talking about and can catch there lies.

God know's I tell my mother to let me do the scheduled checkups for her neon. Dodge tried to tell her she needed all new tires (tires were fine), she needed all this and that done. Which was bs. They just love taking money from people.

I do the same thing. If the shop wont let me watch then they dont get my money.

saw this on tv a while back....it shocked me. and like you others...why i do all my own work unless its just something i cant do, then i watch for as long as it takes and if its more than a day im there every day checking up and watching.

I don't like people watching me,but I don't need to.
our shop doesn't advertise AT ALL,so all our customers are friends, making it a better, more trusted enviroment.
not to mention it's just the owner me and one other person I chose to work under me.

(we have made a good amount of customers off of jiffylube though)

BAHAHA JCELL used to work at Jiffylube. Told me once that they totally forgot to put oil in one ladies car and had to tell her to come back. I just got into a discussion with one guy at one of those "rapilube" places with my GFs car. They installed an air filter when it wasn't included in the price. I asked why they installed it if I only came for an oil change and he said "oh when we spoke you mentioned something about a filter so I assumed it was the air filter". I literally almost got into a fist fight with the fucktard cause obviously your shouldn't assume s***. It started to rain, so I let it end there. If I have to ever go there again, im gonna be a dick 120%.

can't say i'm surprised...

i have a few trusted places that i go to get work done on my car, and though i generally watch and 'hover', i also trust them enough to properly do any work that i bring my car in for. i wouldn't go there if i didn't, plain and simple.

places make it that much more difficult for honest shops to be trusted themselfs in the consumers eyes. i take it upon myself to take customers out to my bay and show and EXPLAIN my recommendations. though it bothers me when customers hover over my while i work, i can honestly understand why they do after watching that vid.

Im currently the Asst. Manager at Monro Muffler Brake & Service....Organization that currently is affiliated and recently bought out Jiffy Lube. That s*** is def not unheard of....I can speak from personal experiences that money is the name of the game, big name companies take short cuts, me personally I dont like rules and i dont like taking orders nor screwing over customers. I do things the best way i feel fit without giving someone the shaft. Private shops is the way to be man tho. There more in it for the pride of having their name recognized more then the money in lot cases. But you find a good mechanic regardless if its a chain or private ma & pa store stick with them. Dont bounce!! Not all chain shops are like that tho...but all it takes is one to make it horrible for everyone else...shady bastards!!

that s*** bothers the hell out of me man!!! You have NO IDEA lol Not bad mouth anyone or what not, but from my shop the majority of which who do that are of Middle-Eastern ethnics who argue with me about EVERYTHING im doing.....I failed a guy like this for a NYS Inspection b.c he had ZERO pad left & it was metal to metal, HE FLIPPPPPPED & wanted to call corp. on me. I gave him the number and told him to have a nice day lol Clips like that ruin everyone

s***...I always take my car to jiffylube for oil change...in fact I even bring my own motor oils to them... I try to trust them because one time when they asked me to change fuel filter i told them go ahead and manager came back saying that our car's fuel filter is located at different place so they can't do it.
hmm...should I watch them or what...

this is why I don't deal with nationwide chains anymore, this has happened to me alot with some of the exxon lube express and even merchants places when I was driving my brother's firebird. I only ever take my car to two garrages anymore, where I personaly know the mechanics and managers, they're both family run.

yet another reason to do routine maintenance and repairs yourself, and to know exactly what your car needs/doesn't when it needs a shop.

good recommendation-- go to private shops, preferably privately/family owned.

I guess, I'm going to try one more time for my local jiffylube and I will ask manager if he saw the news or even heard any notice from corp.
