Mazdaspeed Protege 2003.5
Well my motor is getting ready to die out on me, and I've been searching left and right for motors, and I came across a few Jdm engines and they seem to be in better condition and around the same price even with shipping, I was wondering if a FS DOHC for a 2001 Protege would swap out in my 03.5 speed? Anything I would need extra to do this? Any ups or downs I should consider? Thanks in advance for all the help!

I did the same about 2yrs ago. Can runs fine. Just do make sure you do the windage plate swap for the oil return. I would recommend changing the following
1) timing belt and water pump.
2) Clutch
3) Engine mounts.
Since the engine is out. Easy to do it at that time.

I used al-Japanese engines in Opa Locka (north dade county). Check there web site and see what they have. Plus remember there are 2 vendors on this site that can get you a replacement engine.

Great opportunity to go forged, as long as it's an FSDE and not an FSZE it will drop and in and run fine. FSZE will run fine but has higher compression and a different intake manifold.

Yeah I did some reading up on the ze's and it says it will detonate sooner with boost, and I really wish I could afford a forged motor, but I really don't expect a whole lot out of my msp, I mean idk, it's my daily, so I really can't push it too much, I wish pg and speedcircuit were just a little cheaper.. But its probably gonna have to go that route.. Cuz I can't find anything cheaper!

yeah youll just have to swap a few things over from the motor such as the bearing support plate, and a few other things i believe

yeah the fsze were in the mazdaspeed familia which were NOT boosted, they run a 10:1:1 compression ratio, so boosting on that is risky!

The MSF was NA and pushed 190hp, while the MSP was turbo and only pushed 190hp,

it would be kind of cool to do the MSF conversion, if i wasn't about gaining more ponypower i would do it if i blew my motor, who needs a turbo? lol

the only reason to do a FSZE swap is if you plan to race in a NA class, or you're allergic to boost. that's it.

plus, i guarantee that all these JDM crate engines are missing something vital to getting that motor running -- like an ECU or an engine harness. if it was that easy, everyone would do it.

el nuevo... or the new guy. 03 msp and 1990 miata

new to the forum-page-club-sceen etc. any way I just bought a mazdaspeed protege with a blown engine. I did not know it was going to be this hard let along expensive to get the car rolling. Please help. The car is in awesome shape and I been wanting to have one since 2003 when they came out. I been searching and people do not seem to be shearing the true info needed. Thanks

make your own thread -- people would gladly help you there. this is the right section to do it in... but you can do it with just about any protege engine, you just need to swap a few things from the old block to the new one assuming they werent damaged when the motor let go.

Well I just bought a motor from Ken at pg, so hopefully it'll get here soon, I had to park the msp, so I'm riding b**** in my girls car til it comes in..
