i was wondering if anyone knew where/how i could get a used japanese license plate to put on the front of my car. i think it would be cool and i can't find one anywhere on the net. any help would be great. thanks

I bought a custom Japanese plate for $40 from Custom Engraving. You can have 5-6 arabic characters on the bottom and up to 2 numbers on the top. They said they have no control over the Japanese characters. I had them match my IL personalized plates. They didn't stamp any Japanese characters on mine, so I bought a mazda kansei sticker to put on it (which doesn't have the same effect, sigh). I've yet to get harrassed by the cops in over 5 months of sporting the plate, even after a speeding ticket. Anyway here's that website:

thanks for the post. did the plate have holes predrilled or did you have to make them. i have heard that Japanese plates are bigger? does it fit in you license plate holder on the front of you car? thanks.

I had to drill it myself. The plate fits right in your OEM plate holder. Here's a photo:

Why....? I think that's going a LITTLE overboard with JDM fad :D ... oh well, good for you guys I guess. I just think it's funny being that you're in the US and you want Japanese license plates... didn't think EVERYTHING from Japan is that much better than the US.... :)

might be a good way to cover up the bumper holes if you move...for example, i live in NJ now (front plates), but if i moved to PA (no front plates), i'd have two holes in the bumper where the bracket was. what to do?

my RSX-S had a better solution -- the bracket was mounted iside the lower grille -- it had two extended pieces on theback that bolted inside so there were no bumper holes. very good idea!

i think i am only going to do it if i can get a hold of one of those trick hindged brackets. otherwise, i will just leave it plain. i am so glad i live in a state that does not require front plates.

i was actually lookin on plates and i found a place that makes euro plates.. the long ones. i am in california. i was wondering if i got the plate with my california number on it would it count as a legal front plate?
thanks for the info

nope, very illegal.

in fact, using a real plate from anywhere can be a ticket in some places. I used to have an old plate from Bonaire (island in the caribbean), and found out from a state trooper that such things, while unlikely to get you punished, are illegal in many places.
Of course, you're not likely to get hassled, but if you should get into trouble in your car, it's another charge that can be leveled against you.

Years ago, my friend's family imported a white VW Squareback from West Germany* (while visiting family). It came back with the West German export plates (which at the time were oval shaped).

They put the NY plates over the oval ones (which stuck out past the standard issue New York plates) and it looked very cool. Their Volvo had the same setup.

* Told you it was a while ago.
