Hey guys, my friend with a Mazda 3, 2.0 Sedan wants to get an intake, but doesn't want to spend 200 something dollars for an Injen, or AEM. He also doesn't want to have to worry about warranty issues. So i mentioned to him the idea of just putting a cone filter on the stock intake piping. But i was wondering what the diameter of the stock piping was, so he knows what size filter to get. And would there be any difference sound wise, for that is what he mostly wants other than performance? If anyone can answer this, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This seems like a really bad idea. You didn't indicate at all where his MAF is going to go. Concidering that AEM even has issues with the MAF for some people, I don't see this going well. One of the local guys here bought a Weapon R which are cheaper than AEM and Injen on ebay, and he's having alot of issue with idle and acceleration, plus CEL's. And that intake is probably about what your friend would make, but better quality.

thanks for the advice. IDK anything about mazda 3's, but i figured it could be somewhat similar to the protege. I guess not. I'll just tell him spend the cash, don't be a cheap ass, and get a real deal intake. Thanks.
