Increasing tire size on a 16" rim

Greetings Mazda drivers,

My wife owns an 07 Mazda3S with the OEM 16 rims and P205/55R tires and it seems like she blows a tire every other month (including one today on the highway). The problem is she hits a hole, the wheel and tire connect and the wheel cuts the inside of the sidewall on the tire causing a bulge. Other times, the tire just blows. I have been in her car and had the front passenger tire blow on a somewhat small hole while driving. I am not a Mazda driver and my knowledge is limited, but I have read here that we cannot downgrade to a 15" wheel due to the brake assembly. Right?

In a perfect world I would just tell my wife to be more careful and not hit potholes in the road, and also decrease the rim size to allow for a larger sidewall tire with more cushion... but its not a perfect world. Is there any combination of wheel/tire that I can use to add more sidewall so she isn't having blowouts so often? Or am I S.O.L? If I were to put tires with an aspect ratio of 65 (instead of 55) how much would that throw off the speedometer?

I have to replace the OEM rim that the tire blew on today because it was bent in the blowout and driving to the shoulder of the road. Its possible that the rim was slightly bent before due to the multiple holes that have been hit over the last few years, causing a weak spot where the tire beads to the wheel. Maybe a new rim will decrease the blowouts?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks!

Hmm sounds like a combination of driving habits and road conditions that you can't help are to blame. An alternative tire size that supports the OEM 16x6.5" wheel dimensions would be 225/50/16, but really the amount of sidewall would be the same.

You can play with different tire dimensions with this web-based calculator:

Be sure to check the supported wheel widths through TireRack or the tire manufacturer when you think you've found another tire size.

I'm pretty sure 15" OEM wheels will not fit the Mazda 3s/2.3 liter due to the caliper size. The only other thing I can think of would be a to downgrade to Mazda 3i/2.0 liter calipers & rotors if you really wanted to use 15" OEM wheels but that's pretty extreme. Unless the cost of bimonthly tire replacement exceeds $500-600 bucks then it might make financial sense LOL.
