In what year did they start making the P5?

Was it in 2001 for the 2002 model? How about the last generation of protege? When did that start? Also isn't the P5 very very similar to the protege? If not, please explain.

2002 was the first year the P5 was manufactured. The P5 is basically a 5 door Protege with some subtle performance modifications.

the car you know as the P5 was introduced in Oct 2000 in Japan as the Familia Facelift, advertised in the us 2001 as a 2002 model (unfortunately mazda website doesn't spill out the exact date :\ )... and yes,the p5 is very similar to the protege (yes)

Performance modifications? I'm not aware of any performance modifications between the Protege sedan and the P5.

The DX Protege sedan has 4 lug disc up front and drums in the rear.

made in 2001 but marketed for 2002 release (they were hidden on the lots here until the early release date in mid to late 2001). p5 is the hatch/wagon of the protege sedan the hatch is slightly heavier than the sedan. not all ES models are 5 lug. i know the '99 ES 1.8L came in 4 lug. and my understanding is the familia has been in japan for many years.
