Idling at 2k on start up?

Just wondering if this is normal, or if others have experienced this. My friend that works for Ford says that the cold can have different effects on cars, and this started when the weather got frigid. Basically, when I start up my car it idles at 2k for a few seconds before it warms up more and then it drops down closer to 1k.

Anyone think this is something to get checked, or should I wait until it's warmer and see if it continues?

Nope thats perfectly normal. It should usually start at about 2K and slowly drop to about 700 after about 1-2 mins. The ECU does this on purpose to warm the engine.

Thanks Jays.

Powerslave, it wasn't doing it while it was still warm out. Thank you for your help though.

Mine does it when its 70 out, is that warm? I have only had the car for a couple months and it hasnt gone above 70. I dont know how its going to react when its 110-115 though.

Moving Idle

Yeah I agree about the idle being normal.

Although, I noticed that my car (whether it be at a light, or warming up) it seems to rev itself ever so slightly on its own (couple hundred rpms or so) then go back down. It happens in a fairly cyclic fashion. It was bugging me forever.

Talked to a mechanic friend, and it turns out, since I had the auto-climate control on, it was using the a/c compressor and causing the idle to move. It happens in many cars, but it is much more noticeable in cars like ours with such loud stock exhausts.

In case anyone else experiences this.

My Nissan Sentra does this as well. It's normal. Not sure about the MS3, but there's a valve in the sentra that lets more air in so the idle is higher when it's cold. When it warms up, the valve closes (a thermostat of sorts), and idle returns to normal.

I knew about the A/C causing the RPMs to cycle like that...but whats annoying to me is that when you have the A/C off and just use the fan, it still cycles the RPM levels... My previous Mazda only cycled like that with the A/C button on... Its so frustrating!!!!(bang)

Thats strange. Mine doesn't do that. I use the Auto Climate control all the time but I usually turn off the A/C. Once I turn off the A/C the RPM surges stop instantly.

Try idling with just the fan running for a few and see if it does the rpm cycling thing. Mine did it since day one...its not as noticeable as when the a/c is on, but it still does it in a reduced amount...
