1984 RX-7 GSL-SE (long gone)
I had an 84 GSL-SE back in the day. We recently bought two CX-5's, one for my daughter and one for my wife. Driving these cars reminded me why I was once such a fan of Mazda and made me nostalgic for my old RX-7. I wish they'd bring these back.
I sat in a Miata while at the dealership one day and it just didn't feel the same. I don't recall feeling as cramped in the RX-7, because it had the open hatchback. In the Miata your head and back are against the wall with barely any elbow room. I don't think I'd like that. The RX-7 was much more comfortable to fit into. At least that's my recollection.
I think they could bring back the original body style - or very close to it - and do well. To me, it was the perfect combination of clean, understated, distinctive, and timeless - if it ain't broke why fix it. I remember how disappointed I was when the 2nd gen came out in 87(?). I'd been looking forward to an update but could never come around to the changes. The 3rd gen's styling was OK I guess, better than the 2nd, but as I recall they priced them pretty high up the sports car food chain which took away a lot of what was so appealing about the original.
It would seem easy enough to upgrade to modern tech and electronics like back-up cameras, adaptive cruise, and touch screens while keeping the rest mostly the same. But maybe the rotary engine's just not up to today's standards or can't meet fuel efficiency requirements. I don't know. But I do know that I'd love a chance to buy another one of these.
Thoughts?
