I can't remove my key from my ignition

I can't remove my key from my 2001 MPV ignition. The engine turns off, however, the key will not turn back all the way to allow it to be removed. If I disconnect the battery terminal, I can then remove the key. Any ideas of what is wrong and how it can be fixed?

What happens if you disconnect the battery, and then reconnect the battery BEFORE you try to remove the key? Is the key still stuck? i know that won't solve the problem, but maybe that will help you figure out what is holding it in. As shane said, it sounds like issue has to do with the "spring lock mechanism."

As you suggested, I tried to to disconnect the battery, and then reconnect the battery BEFORE I tried to remove the key and the key will not come out.

Service wants to changed out the entire Shifter Column Assembly. This will only take one hour to do, but the assembly is pricey ($500). I'm sure if someone knew what they were doing, they could take apart the existing assembly and replace the small part within the assembly as opposed to the entire assembly.

Any thoughts?

If it's a auto tranny it has to be in park. My rx7 was doing the same thing. It had a switch at shifter that needed adjustment...

I'm being told that my entire shifter assembly has to be changed out. Do you remember what it cost you to fix the switch within your shifter that needed adjustment? ...where did you get it fixed?
