Hey fellas, I've been looking for a new air intake system (still open to different options at this time), but I realized that everything out there seems to be for 1.8L engines. Does anyone know where I can find one for my '99 LX? Thanks.
Injen makes a cold air intake for the 1.6 liter engine Proteges.
It is available from protege 5 online as well as nopi online, and many other sources. Make sure you get an intake specifically for the 1.6L engine because our MAF sensors are a considerably different shape then the 1.8L/2.0L engines.
I have had 2 Injen intakes on my car, initially back in late 2001 when they were first introduced for the 1.6 and then one from 2002.
I don't think anybody with a 1.6L based Protege has EVER had a perfect powerband with the Injen intake though, my car drives considerably smoother with the stock airbox in the car. The MAF (I have had 2 different mass airflow sensors on my car) along with the cars ECU never seemed to adjust to the airflow the injen intake provided, so the powerband was almost undrivable at low revs or in lets say 4th or 5th gear on the highway. Car would lean out and become undrivable until downshifting.
So, AFAIC, I would recommend making your own or trying out the Injen for yourself and maybe your car will adjust better.
you could do what i did with my 1.8. you just take the standard air box out, then fit a reducer turned around so it expands to 3". then u need a short piece of 3" pipe inserted into the 3" end of the rubber reducer. then drill a hole in the pipe to fit the rubber grommit from the sensor in the factory air box and insert the sensor probe. then over the 3" pipe you can fit a k&n filter or such. make a bracket to hold the filter in position. you can also make a custom air box feeding from a vent in the hood. due to the increased air flow you will need to run on premium fuel or change your ecu to prevent detonation.
