How to tell if bigger tires will fit?

Okay guys, I know this might sound dumb but I have a 2006 Mazda 3 sedan i. The stock tires are 205 55 R16. I wanna get bigger tires but not too big so I want 17s. How do I know what tire sizes will fit if the rim I want is 17x7?
