How to negotiate CX-5 17" to 19" wheel upgrade when purchasing a new vehicle?

Hi guys, just doing a little research and came across this great site!

I'm about to buy a base CX-5 Touring but want stock GT 19" wheels instead of the 17" wheels that come with it.

What would the dealers cost-differential be in switching out the 17" wheels with 19" wheels, can they even do that?

The for the price they'll charge you, you could get better aftermarket wheels.

You want the dealer to take the wheels off of a GT on their lot and swap with your Touring? Very unlikely, as now they would have to find a person who wants a GT with the smaller wheels.

If you really like the 19's from the GT, you can get some wheels from a member here, or off of eBay, craigslist etc.. That way you can get some better tires too.
Plan on spending ~$150 per wheel for some used OEM 19's, If they do not have to be OEM, you could find lots of other options on a site like www.TIRERACK.com, where you can see what they look like on your car, and that you might like the look of even more?

Thanks for the quick reply guys!

I wasn't thinking they would take off another vehicle but just just get them from the parts department and maybe charge me the difference!?

I imagine I could buy aftermarket but then I'd have to sell the stock wheels (at a loss) and learn something about rims, paying full retail + also the tires to put on them! :)
I'm more of a newbie and thought the default from Mazda would be good enough for my needs...

Parts department price per wheel would be ASTRONOMICAL... I will see how much they sell for...

The only way this might work is if your dealer happened to have a set of take-off 19s from a previous sale. Doesn't hurt to ask, but don't expect much of a deal.

Thanks MazdaDude!
Can you check on the stock 17" wheels too because I'd really only want to offer to pay the difference!
Not sure how to know the difference the dealership would pay for tires?

I don't see the 2016 version wheels yet, but all of the other wheels are 300-350 each.

The 17 inch ones I see on sale for $297 each.http://parts.arlingtonmazda.com/products/WHEEL%2CDISC%252dALUMI.-%289965%252d61%252d7070%29.html

However there are SO many other choices available to you that are lighter or you might like even more...

I would tell the dealer what you want, and if they really want to make the sale, they will find a way to do it... but if you are looking for a ballpark $ figure of what the dealer sees it being worth their time or costing them, then I would say $800~

If you are wanting to know the $ cost difference between the 17 and 19's, and realistically before the Mazda gets made and leaves the assembly line, the difference would be ~$300 maybe>? Wheels and tires

Tires for the 17s will be cheaper and you'll have more choices. The 17s will weigh less and therefore not hit expansion joints and pavement spalls as hard giving you a better ride. The dealer cannot sell your 17s as new, so he won't want them. I'd expect he'd charge full parts price for the 19s and offer little for yours. Tire Rack's price for a set of OEM 19-inc tires is $1150 + $300 x 4 for the wheels. I'll bet you can buy a Grand Touring for that difference. Ask.

I could have sworn my dealer said $700/rim when trying to sell me some type of wheel insurance plan. I declined.

But, if you often have snowy winters, buy the car from the dealer as is and use the 17"s for winter use (snow tires if you can afford them). Then buy a set of 2016 19"s off eBay for $1,200 (w/new stock tires). Pretty sure shipping might be included in that cost. Another member just bought a set of the first gen 19"s for that price. The eBay seller says he has a supply of new rims due to customer upgrades.

I searched eBay and didn't see any 19" w/new stock tires!?
Do you have a link to the listing or can you point me to the thread discussing?
(No need for snow tires...)

I seems crazy/wrong that I can upgrade to a GT and get 19" wheels+tires+navigation+leather+all the other goodies for the same price as getting 19's not upgrading!?

There's another issue with these GT 19". They take LOW PROFILE tires. Now, low profile tires are COSTLY.

I just bought a Touring with the 17s and asked them about 19s. They wouldnt do it, said I had to upgrade to a complete package $3000+

$300 per wheel can get you a good quality, nice style probably lighter wheel

Or you might find a recent purchaser of a GT who wanted the creature comforts of the GT but would prefer the lighter weight and off the line performance of the 17" wheels. Plus the wider selection of tires at a better price. I almost bought a GT but didn't want to hassle with trying to negotiate a wheel swap with the dealer so I just stuck with a Touring.

Well of course the OP doesn't have to buy a larger/non oem spec wheel, I'm just saying if he is/was willing to pay $300 a wheel, and he wasn't bent on the OEM wheel style that he might find something lighter or the same weight as, possible more to his liking for that price or less. I know of a mod on mazda3revolution who bought a nice set of 18"x7.5" +50 (oem offset) Reys that weight about 16lb each. In fact, his larger wheel and tire are lighter than his OEM wheel/tire (his cost more than $300 though).

As an aside, here is the link. http://mazda3revolution.com/forums/other-cars/69753-mazdaspeedmyk-s-2015-mazda-cx5.html
He has some minor mods (including a JBR rear sway bar) and posts a good amount of wilderness shots so I'd say they have not affected the utility of his car for his needs.
