hi guys
i did a cold air intake on my 1.6l protege5 to suit the factory air box and thought some one out there might like it. this is the first how to i have writen and i did not get any pictures so if you have any questions please ask here goes.
after doing the mod i actually did it the hard way so here is the easy way.
you will need a 500mm of pvc pipe with an out side diameter of 68 to 70 mm and a 90 degree elbow to fit that pipe.
first take off the all the factory inlet before the air box which has all the baffels to silence the noise of induction howl it is in two pieces and one of the bolts is under the air box it self so you will need to unbolt that two.
next remove the bracket that holds the air con condenseri belive it is (its the silver barrel shaped thing in between the chassy and the radiator fan) dont unbolt any of the lines because if it is the air con condencer you will let out all for your refrigerant and have to regas your air con which is costly.
next the elbow i bought fit the air box inlet perfectly and i messured the size pipe i needed to cut to fit i cut i just a bit longer so it actually stuck out the bottom.
the i cut a hole in the plactic unber the front end where the pipe was going to fit through i didnt have a dremmal which would have helped so i just used my soldering iron it did the job.
then i connected all the pipe glued it together and sprayed it matt black. then i used two screw to hold the pipe on to the air box. i could not get the two bolts thatheld the air box back because it sat slightly of on an angle so i only put one pack.
(i actually drove around for a few day before putting the screws in and it all hels together i had no problems but its not hard to put them in so just do it)
then i cabled tied the air con condenser to the intake (its been 2months and ive had no problems) to secure it.
and thats it. since then i have borrowed a dremmal and cut the bottom of the pipe to match the conture of the plastic and fiber glassed it to smooth the flow of air past the intake but thats just pretty stuff
the pipe cost me $10 and the mod cost me about an hour but i had fo figer out how to do it. i have read that the bottom cold air induction of the corvetts produce more power than the front cold air induction only by a couple of hp thou
warning dont go through any really deep puddles or you will suck up a cylinder full of water ive been through puddles an inch or two deep and have had no problem plus because it down in front of the tyers you are not sucking up abnormal amount of dust. end result my card sounds tougher with the new intake howl and i fells like it has more hp but i have never had it dynod before or after but i do find it easyer to get my 16" roh adrenalin with the 205/45/16 toyos to spin up easyer if that is any conclusion
hope you like the mod im happy with it
