Hints with Navigation

I just bought the CX-7 and wanted to know if anyone has found a way to override the nav system while driving. I know on my other car (Toyota Sequoia) I pushed a series of buttons on the nav system and I was able to use the destination options while driving. Anyone have any ideas

Overide to make it work??

It won't let you use it when driving??

How bad..

Will it work if the park brake is on?

The navigation lock is based on your current GPS coordinates. If you coordinates change within 5 seconds (i think), the Navigation destination entry will lock out until you come to a stop again. There is a mod that Ive heard of but it really doesnt seem all that good. What it does is "freeze" the stored coordinates in the computer so the nav thinks your standing still but it only works for about 40 seconds at a time. Most people put it on a toggle switch and keeping switching it off then back on to access the locked features. Most Nav systems are like this now. I know, Infiniti, Acura, and Mazda all use the GPS coord update to lock the destination functions out. I just wish they tied it in with the seat scale so that if the passenger seat scale read more than 40 pounds, it would unlock the features so that the passenger can access the functions.

Holy Crap..

I hoe there is a way around this that is better than a silly switch.

I have a conventional GPS on my dash... I would literally be lost without it..

I don't "Stare or Gaze" at it. But I do check it when I'm going somewhere unfamiliar...

the nav system functions just fine when you're moving, you just can't make any changes, add a detour, get new directions etc, it locks out the buttons.

I suppose from a safety standpoint this makes sense, but it's disappointing coming from an Acura in which I could full utilize the entire navigation system whether I was moving or not...

Not exactly true. You can get some of the features by using voice commands... like detour. I haven't familiarized myself with all the voice features yet though. I do know that I can say "go home" and it will set the destination. I imagine it will work similarly with preset destinations, but not sure.

I've got the same problem with Mazda 5 GPS Nav

I can't use my Mazda 5 in-dash Nav while moving either. I haven't tried voice commands. I will check this out.

As mentioned previously, my Acura TL Nav works even while moving.

Please post if you have an override on this hassle...

There are many creative "work arounds" if you experiment with it. Some of the things thay disable are silly. For example, they allo you to select the meemory point menu, but you can't scroll through the choices and it only displays a handful of them. However if you load the most common ones into preset destinations you can select those while driving or use the voice command. The voice commands seem to be hit or miss sometimes. I have also been able to navigate to some places buy using scrolling through the map itself, but that seems more distracting than it's worth at times. For the most part I have been able to get it to do what needs to be done when I'm on the move. In some cases I have been able to easily pull over to do what I have to do.

In some ways I'm thankful that it prevents the user from pushing too many buttons while driving. It would be nice if they allowed a passenger to use it but guess what? At some point the driver would end up using it and get distracted enough to cause a serious accident so maybe it's a good thing. Let's face it, given the option to use it while driving is not a good thing for us all. I'm surprised that not all systems are set up to work that way. I can also imagine that someday soon, as NAVs become a standard option or more and more people get them, there will be initiatives by the Government on the part of the insurance industry to disable certain features.
