Hi Boost Turbo Kit

Has anyone installed the Hi-Boost turbo kit (one of the sponsors of this site)? $3995 for 100-120 additional whp without internal mods to the P5 engine scares me. Mazda kept the boost on the Mazdaspeed low to keep the hp down so they didn't have to strengthen internals. I can't picture the stock drivetrain and engine being able to handle almost double the whp without problems. But, damn, the car must absolutely haul with that kind of power!

Mazda made minimal modifications to the ECU on the Mazdaspeed for fuel and timing control to handle the level of boost they were aiming for. HiBoost's kit includes Haltech computerized engine management which, among other things, remaps the fuel curve to supply the proper level of fuel for the engine while the car is under boost. Even with stock internals, there is much more lee way to play with when you are controlling timing and fuel.

If you are worried about too much stress on the engine, companies like Flyin Protege and Spool Turbo sell lower powered kits.

Do a search on the subject and check out the Forced Induction section for more answers to your queries. :)

There are P5's pushing close to 300 WHP on stock internals.

Taking a look at the rods and pistons on this engine will dissaude you from going that far on stock internals for very long. I'm looking at one on my desk as we speak :) Mazda Motorsports feels that the protege engine is safe up to no more than 250 hp.
