So I first noticed this last night. in my 03 NA P5 From the passenger side of the engine bay there is a spooling/whining sound. I took a look and its either the pulleys, alternator, or something from that area. Its only noticeable from 3+ rpms but so far hasnt effected any performance of the car. If you got any advice, info, or ideas on what this could be I would greatly appreciate it.

manual. I dont believe i have a vac leak because my idle isnt bad. You can also hear it as the RPM's decrease and the noise has a smaller frequency in lower rpm then higher. The higher I go the louder it gets )^;

any and all suggestions will help. I want to try to fix this friday so I need some more suggestions on what to look for

i get this too.. when in neutral push the gas dont hear it if you hold it down but when you get to 3k rpm then let go it sounds like a turkey call.. im thinking its an exhaust leak from the manifold. just my 2c

sounds like an electrical whine?... sometimes occurs with bad grounds.
if it was an exhaust leak from the manifold wouldnt it throw an CEL?

Exhaust leaks don't always throw a cel and if it does it can take a day or 2 before it throws it. Vac leaks don't always cause a bad idle either. I had the same problem a few weeks ago but it went away almost sounds like a really quiet supercharger. I would say check power steering pump all pulleys and belts

Well i constantly have exhaust problems and currently have a CEL that comes and goes. The sound also comes and goes but when ive tracked it down to the passenger side of the engine bay. I have all new belts (5k or less miles) so i would say exhaust or alternator. it definitely sounds like an electrical whine tho like one of those wind up flashlights or toy space pistols
