300W RMS would be fine for that sub...but like you said...they recommedn right up to 500W. The JL 250/1 is a good option...especially is you don't have the rest of your soundsystem upgraded (ie Components and amps). I think 500W might be overkill and just drown everything else out. If you want to spend a bit less, look into JL's e-series (e1400D, coming out soon). There's other stuff out there, of course, I just really like JL because it'll give you the power you need at 4ohms. A lot of sub amps rate at 2ohms and list that RMS (like the Kicker KX400.1). Kicker makes a decent sub amp as well...hits hard, alright on the pricing. Look at alpine as well...though, in my experience, they don't seem to hit as hard...kinda the same deal with eclipse for sub amps. MTX and some of the older (last years) RF stuff, would probably be fine as well. It all depends on how much you'd like to spend.
