2001 mazda protege mp3
Hey all,
I have owned my mp3 for about 5 years now and love it. I long story short, my engine is toast and I need a replacement. SO upset about this but thats life. My questions is:
1- Are there any mp3 engines out there for sale?
2- If not does a regular protege engine fit?

Thanks so much for your input. Hopefully I don't have to junk it.

The MP3 has the same exact engine as any 2.0L protege. The only power difference comes from the lack of the VTCS butterflies and the different ECU.

Are there any differences between an MP3 and a regular Protege other than the intake manifold and ECU? How about exhaust and intake tubing? I'm thinking of upgrading my P5 to MP3 spec and I'm wondering what all I need other than the ECU flash to get 140 HP.

The MP3 did have a racing beat exhaust but I'm fairly sure that was only an axleback. The intake mani didn't have the VTCS flaps so you can easily convert your stock one to be the "same". The engine itself is exactly the same. With the MP3 ECU, you have to use premium fuel.

Mp3 used a catback msp used the axle back although probly not much difference in the piping. And you don't have to use premium fuel the ecu just doesn't advance the timing when you use regular. I get a slight barely noticable difference in power using premium but I get better milage using regular

So the mechanic that I took it too said that it is not possible to swap the regular protege 2.0L with the mp3 2.0L. "there is just too many differences between the two" he says. Is he a liar. Also he has called a couple of places that rebuild engines and they dont even want to look at it. I am going to talk to http://www.jasperengines.com/index.php these guys on Monday and see what they say. I am not skilled enough to do an engine swap myself (nor do I have the time). Anyone in WI want take on this task? Thanks lots for the info guys.

He's a liar. It's the exact same engine besides the VTCS removed in the mp3. All you would have to do is take the intake manifold off the blown motor and put it on the new motor and you'd have the exact same thing that you had before you blew the motor.

That's right. I forgot about the timing advance thing lol.

The mechanic is full of s***. He has no idea what the hell he's talking about. Give me his phone number. I'll talk some sense into him. I'm serious. If he's halfway competent, all he needs to do is pull the motor, put in new protege motor, and done.
