Good Afternoon.

I have been offered a turbo of a 2010 Subaru Impreza STi 330s. Its only done 2000miles.

So will it be a straight swap in and out. Or will it be a bit of mission?

Second question will it be worth it. Its a IHI vf48.

You kidding, man? Turbos aren't interchangeable like wall switches. You'll at least need a custom manifold and downpipe. Then you'll need to tune the engine for the particular character of that turbo.

Ok that came out wrong. I ment is it a worthy upgrade over the stock turbo?

*Edit*: Just re read what I said and yes ooops stupid question.

Why would you when there are several after market stage II & III turbos made specifically for the MS3?

Even if you were getting it for free which you probably aren't, its just a bad idea and a waste of time.

if the exhaust flange is the same then it wont be to hard of a swap, maybe change a few vac lines around and make sure there isnt any fitment issues. I think your stock turbo is a KO4 not entirely sure how much difference there is between them.

This is why im asking the question. I can get it for 200 ($325). Its done 2k miles. Im just wondering if its a worthy upgrade over the stock K04 tubby. I can get the custom work done easily enough. I can fit it myself. But like ive said is it worth it.

Saying that ive just read the thread above this one about the Akuma HT65. Might just spend the extra 300 and get this instead.

Well, the exhaust flange ain't the same. The wastegate is in a different location relative to the the exhaust impeller, the water and oil lines connect in different locations and its flow characteristics are entirely different. You gotta have completely custom made manifold, completely different custom downpipe, completely different linkage for the wastegate actuator, and maybe a different actuator (because of length differences) and a completely different ECU tuning. Other than that, I'd say go for it.

Or you could get something that actually fits.

Thanks for editing your language to the acceptable standards of courtesy here and not the earlier beaking off like you're on MSF.

The above is spoken like someone who gets their knowledge of modifying cars from Need For Speed. It's just never as easy in practise as you make out and, that's from someone who's merged turbos from different brands onto cars unintended for them more than once.

put them together(if u have extra ko4) to see any difference. STI's turbo is really good up to 500hps and no smoke problem. with that price...s*** i snap it right off his hand!!!

There's no doubt it's a better turbo than the bad KO4 (then again, what isn't?), it's just if you're up for all the little headaches that'll come with fitting it. If you really are, give it a shot, it'll support more than even a ported/flowed stocker will and last longer under duress.

Apologies to OP if I came across too strong. I just see a huge mountain to climb to make it work. Looking at photos of the flanges and fittings on the two turbos and the location of the lines make me think this is going to be a huge and expensive proposition.

You have a chance to pick up a great turbo for a dirt cheap price. But the fabrication is going to be a pretty big undertaking, IMHO, and you will have to spend the bucks for a custom tuning program and have a very experienced tuner spend what will probably be a lot expensive development time with that tuner to get it right.

Maybe consider flipping the turbo at a nice profit to someone on one of the WRX/STI boards and use the profit toward a big turbo kit that already has all the research and development and tuning issues resolved?

Thanks for all the comments guys. From what im reading it sounds like its alot of work, and to be honest alot of custom work. Think I might just stick to a turbo that just slots in with minimal changes.

MSMS3 Im liking your idea of selling it on for profit. Didnt think about that one. Will look up how much they go for.

Got to say my knowledge of these engines is very limited. Give me a VW/Audi 1.8T or a RB26 motor and im happy smiley faces when it comes to tuning.
