Gangstagangsta Build time!!

I needed a place to keep all of my progress thus far on my first build. I have owned the car since 2005 and its been one hellofa ride! This being my first turbo'd car it took me a bit longer to get into the deeper recesses of the motor. The learning curve was steep but not as bad as I thought when I first bought her. I battled with many of the common problems: lean code, aggressive oil consumption, no boost, too much boost, fuel cut, smoke at WOT and a few others. When I first bought her I thought it would be a DD that would be fun to drive and get decent gas mileage, it did not disappoint. Now I fear my modding bug has gotten the best of me and I must appease the beast within.

GTX 2560 instead of a disco???

Machine shop work I could not do myself
hone/balance polished crank, rods, pistons,
Decked surfaces
acid bath for dirty parts
Definitely getting the 3AVJ now!

I know there is more but I think the general build is represented. I cant wait to get started! The block is already at the shop and been decked ,crank polished, waiting on rods for the balance. I have Ported the head and knife edged the intake and blended the bowls, Ported and polished the Intake manifold to match head. I will be doing a wrinkle paint to the VC and polishing all hard pipes. With the motor out I will also replace old busted and broken front sway bar bushings and clean engine bay!

This forum and its members have helped me so much in the past. I went from turbo fool to turbo cool because of everyones advice and help.... It only took 6 years:) Big thanks, and cheers to another 6 years!

IMO I would stay away from the hot wire set....I also was considering that but I talk to a buddy of mine from work (i'm a cadillac machanic) he said you waste your money with those and possible run into a lot of problems running those, just because it's over kill...I would suggest a 1.8 coil pack and plug wires.....it cleans up the valve cover without risking other problems.....your going to have a nice build BTW...look forward to reading updates

The whole reason I wanted it was to clean up the valve cover haha. I will look into the 1.8 conversion, and thanks for the heads up. I will try and keep this post as up to date as possible with pictures and such of work done and progress.

No problem....Just trying to save you some headaches in the long run :)

1.8l coils require all new VC, Coils, wires and brackets. Sure it cleans up the middle of the VC but you can do many things without spending all that money to make things clean IMO.

you don't have to get a new VC to do the conversion, you can modify the wire boot....I'm just saying hot wires will cause problems...yes it will clean up the VC but will also cause the car not to run right....if the whole reason to do something is to "clean it up" then yes get a VC from a junk yard and paint or polish it....all I was saying is stay away for hot wires

mail time!!

s*** just got real!!! Sams the MAN!

Thanks for the Sub love guys, and yes I will be using a stock turbo. The idea was to use the stock calloway manifold with stock turbo and replace together when I decide to upgrade. I feel I would have a lot more options that way.

The build was put on the back burner while i had some life stuff to deal with. Now I am back at it! Just sent off my oil pump to the Doc for flow increase and coating. Thinking about doing the external regulator but have not decided... any one with advice would be welcome to chime in!

Shop had a big rush of work to do so my motor went low priority. Beautiful day today, and a new part got me motivated to get some head work done. Current motor is strong so I am in no rush.

What is that behind the head???
ZeeMcwsl.jpg

A Corksport S-J pipe combo. This was the last piece to the puzzle. When it came in the mail I honestly smiled and waved it over my head while I celebrated victory.
For my build I had never imagined another part but was looking for suitable replacements when this came along. The people at Corksport are a fine group of people with a "have fun" attitude that made working with them enjoyable.

Here are some pictures of current head. I still have to give it another pass to clean up a few areas. But honestly I got tiered of holding the dremel...

Looking at dipyourcar .com and had to try some. I got some gold metalizer with a black backround to make a bronze. IF it works well I think the Racingharts are gonna go bronze.

more work to be done

So the machine shop cannot source the valves. He was going to use Manely performance parts. I can still get Manly to cut a blank to my size but at a custom application fee of $16-$21 per valve. WWith this new news I have pulled the trigger on the supertech vavles +1mm over. I am only intrested in the single spring option right now but I am curious at what increasing the pressure for seating and opening would benefit with a modest 12-psi build? Here is the info sheet I am looking at and the SPR-TC25D are the dual spring set. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

More parts Less money

Got my Super tech valves/Spring/retainers in today running +1mm over bore. The head goes in for work soon and the block is bored. Going to pick it up for a paint then I should be able to begin putting this thing together. I still have the oil pump out for the DOC B treatment so I wont get to far but its all coming together!

I also bought a 2000 1.8l protege valve cover to see if I want to do the conversion. I am starting to collect these VC'c already had 3 this one makes 4. And the build goes on!

Never had a problem with them had three sets and never once had a spark issue.... And what is that issue that they would cause everybody says an issue but never say what issue the way my school teacher explained to me there would be more gain not necessarily hp but a consistent spark

Did you have a grounding kit for your car? I have heard mixed reviews. Most that had positive reviews had a grounding kit. I am going to trying the 1.8l conversion first, but I think I will try the Nology set as well. I am worried about the how the 1.8l setup will work at 14PSI.

Ask Maxx Mazda how his 1.8l coil setup works on his car. IMO if he does not have issues than you should be fine.
