First Major Check Up?

Does anyone know when we are supposed to take our cars in for the first major checkup (apart from the oil, rotating tires, and other checks). I believe it's at 8000 miles, is that correct?

Yah that sounds right. My dealer told me 7500 miles. But most of what they do are just inspections plus and oil change, tire rotation and lube.
Other then that the next "scheduled Maintance" is at about 15,000 miles.

you could always look in the back of your manual...there is a maintenance schedule back there.

Amen!

Thank heavens for Mazda making all the pertinent info public. That way, if you're even remotely handy with a wrench, the last time a Mazda dealership service department needs to ever see the car is when they prep it to go to the new owner - You can do it all yourself, and your car will last much longer.

My "dealer prep" when I bought the car included adjusting the air pressure in the tires to 26 psi all around, even though the manual (as well as the door jamb sticker) specifies 32 psi.

MOST Mazdas sold DO REQUIRE 26 psi, so the "service robots" seem to have that number etched into the brain - One more example of how your own careful maintenance is infinitely preferable to taking it to the guys who do not seem to care a whit about what they sell.

Did I mention you'll save a bundle as well?? I hear reports all the time on the Miata forum that no matter if nothing is wrong with the car, each and every time one is taken into most dealerships, a bill of $150 to $200 is generated for some little (mostly imaginary) "services" the car "really needs."

Wheeeew! Glad I got that off my chest! I feel much better now ;)

My dealer keeps calling me to REMIND me that its time for my cars service....I even got free oil changes for as long as I own the car...but its somewhat a pain in the butt to drive the 55 miles ONE WAY to the dealer to get it done....its NOT worth the time it would take out of MY schedule to have it done....now...if it were 10 or 20 minutes away...you bet....but that is just not the case...

I am with Don...if you are at least a little handy with tools....unless its a major maintenance item...or obviously warrantee work....I don't take the car back to the dealer. She is MY baby to take care of. :{D

Whew, Your dealer sounds like they might have tried, albeit pretty horribly... My car had 51 psi in every tire when I picked it up!!!! My dealer prep consisted of the tire overinflation, no wash, two muddy ass front floormats, and a greasy looking steering wheel. I thought the car handled rather strange on the way home, and as soon as I checked the PSI that night I was shocked...

At least they didn't drive the car any though. When I test drove mine it had 1.7 miles on the odometer, and when I brought it home it had 31, all of which I put on test driving the car. (Nevermind the other demo P5 I drove that I put 40 miles on, and bounced off the rev-limiter quite a few times. ;-) )

At any rate, I will be taking my P5 in @ 12,000 for the complimentary alignment, tire balance and rotation. That will hopefully be the only time I let those idiots put their hands on my car again (and I still haven't decided to go through with it really). I change the oil, and have rotated the tires at 3750, and will again at 7500. Also, I swapped to synthetic oil at 2,500 miles and intend to change it every 5,000 along with a tire rotation. On top of that, I ordered 10 Mazda oem oil filters and plug washers from mazda just so I have the "correct" filter. :)

Anyways, I just hope I don't have any sort of warranty work to speak of as well...

im with most of you guys ido al my own maintanence. I often wonder if this will void our already short lived warranties.

NO....in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM......our warrantee has NOTHING to do with who does the maintenance....OR even if you do any for that matter....

i took my car to mazda for the first service.
WOW i got a $60 oil change.....$30 of that must have been for the car wash they gave me.

do you guys know if the clutch is covered under warranty???
