Looking to get a little more zoom zoom. I'm curious to know what folks have done to squeeze more horsepower out of their 5. Thanks for any input.

Smaller diameter tires. Same as lower final drive gear ratio but a lot easier and cheaper. Lower gears are often overlooked now-a-days as apposed to intake, exhaust, engine mods (all good). A lower final drive ratio will get you through the 1/4 mile faster than stock gearing. Unfortunately with todays front wheel drive systems it is not as easy or cheap as swapping the crown and pinion in a good ol rear drive pumkin.
but it doesn't give you any more horsepower. yes, it lowers your gear ratios, at the expense of an inaccurate speedo, and making 1st gear almost useless. as it is, mine zips to 7K REAL quick in 1st gear, and 2nd pretty easily. why would I want to make that worse AND lose some hwy cruising ability?
my advice would be, as stated, an intake (not worth too much) and a cat back. after that, perhaps a header.
remember, these cars are boxy six passenger people movers, they aren't race cars.
The fs-de is slow. Upgrade your suspension/tires or add boost. Other than that, buy a better performance platform.
Intake/header/exhaust will give you ~5whp. Only *noticeable* gain is possibly throttle response, and a bit more pull up top. The best mod bang for the buck wise is to re-flash your ecu with that of an MP3. Should give you ~7 whp or so. Someone on these forums does it for $150, IIRC.
Ultimately, unless you go F/I, you will end up disappointed with the money you put into N/A mods. Unless you do some serious modifications.
O, and try the forum's SEARCH function!
No, those types of reflashes are not offered and are not beneficial on the fs-de. These aren't VW's or BMWs, lol. getting 60+hp from a chip. (rofl2)
The MP3 is just a higher trim level protege. It had a different ecu fuel/air map with a much better and smoother power band. It's not the type of reflash like you're thinking. It's still a Mazda ecu program. A member of these forums happened to obtain the fuel map and software to reflash to those specs. But yes, if you use 87 octane fuel, the motor will knock and it will retard your timing losing any gains you got from The reflash. You must use 91 or higher.
$150 for 10 hp (~7 whp) is a pretty good gain. Beats the hell out of $400+ for ~3whp with an exhaust.
