Engine Stalls When Placed in Gear

I have a 1993 Mazda Protege and my problem deals with the engine stalling. The problem arose yesterday as a arrived home. The engine died as a pulled into driveway. The engine starts and idles great, but when it is placed in gear (auto trans) it stalls immediately. I believe it is something to do with a sensor, without doing anything, but I wanted some help before jumping in. There are no codes coming up from the computer thus far.

HELP

The tranny is good, I did general work about 6 months ago. I can lift front wheels off the ground and put car in gear and the trans will engage and the engine NOT die, when a little gas is applied, so the load placed on the engine is the problem. I believe it to be the IAC (idle air control valve), because when i disconnect it the engine should speed up to about 1200 RPM from 800 RPM, but instead it drops to about 500 RPM.

The only thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is check the throttle cable going to the transaxle. I don't think the Idle needs to be ajusted unless it fall under 700RPMs.

I acts just the same as when it's in neutral. I have replaced the IAC now and that is not the problem.

I sure hope that IAC you bought was used. Those are very expensive new for something I figured wasn't the problem either. They may not function good and cause erratic idling but rarely outright make the car shut off.

Check to see if the hose that leads to the airbox from the throttle body is okay..It about 1/2 I think.. its not the big hose with the s bend there is one that runs underneath that hooks up to the square portion of the intake.

maybe you should try to check the EGR valve, maybe thats not getting the suction that it should. If that doesn't work check for any pin holes on the vaccumm lines.
