Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance

OK, please don't jump all over me if this is in the manual as I've scoured it and can't find the specific answer I'm looking for.

So, how can I tell if my 2022 CX-5 is using Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance? I know it says that's the default in the US, but I bought mine used and it could have been changed.

TIA,
Tim

yeah could be changed. Search for the menu that shows vehicle status in the infotainment syste
. the maintenance menu is inside and shows the flexible or can be switched to manual. Right next to the menu that shows the fuel consumption for the trip

As far as I could tell, this is not anywhere in the owner's manual. I'm pretty sure this is the setting however it would have been helpful if they used the terminology in the car settings as they did in the manual.

I hope this helps somebody in the future.

yeah. I sometimes alternate between both but I dont like that on automatic it drops the miles to service in thousands only. ie 7500 6500 etc and doesnt show much other setails like date or % oil health.
its basically a useless feature but prob works for most folks.

If it's the default, my dealership has always changed it to 7500 miles. I have never taken possession of one of these vehicles with that setting on.

So a little research and I got this with the help of a little AI. I see no reason not to use it as I'd really like to know if my oil is suspect.

Mazda's Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance system calculates oil life based on various engine operating conditions, but it doesn't rely on a single sensor that directly measures oil quality. Instead, it uses a combination of sensors and a sophisticated algorithm to estimate oil degradation.
Here are some key factors and the related sensors that the system likely utilizes:
  • Engine Load: Sensors like the mass airflow sensor (MAF) and manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) provide information about the amount of air entering the engine, which correlates with engine load. Higher loads mean the engine is working harder, potentially leading to faster oil degradation.
  • Engine Temperature: The engine coolant temperature sensor and oil temperature sensor monitor engine temperature, according to CarParts.com. High temperatures can accelerate oil breakdown.
  • Engine Speed: The crankshaft position sensor provides information on engine RPM, which is another indicator of engine load and operating conditions.
  • Driving Habits: The system may also consider driving patterns, such as frequent stop-and-go driving, short trips, or high-speed cruising, which can impact oil life.

I'll just note that once you get to about 600 miles to go, it starts warning you and has the exact miles. Like it will say 347 miles so while it may start a thousand miles at a time it does drop.
