engine management questions/comments

i am curently rebuilding my engine with forged wiseco pistons,
forged oliver connecting rods, and mazdaspeed intake/exhaust
cams. with any luck, the engine should be back in this week.

i plan on upgrading the fuel system ie: fuel rail/pump/injectors
but i am not sure what management system i should use. ive
checked the forums and have seen mixed reviews on several
different systems. i am leaning toward the apexi afc. i want a
system that will allow me to control the air/fuel system and
compensate for larger injectors. i also need something that i
can set on the fly.

i am open to all suggestions. lemme know what you think i should
do cuz i need a afc soon so i dont create any internal problems.

thanks...

i dunno if the apexi works with our cars but from what I heard if you have the ability, MPI seems to be the best choice for the money. A lot of members are using it.

most information on this forum will point out that AFC and SAFC do not work on these cars. the more popular proven systems are haltech, mpi, microtech and unichip

thanks for the input guys. i think besides from the engine
rebuild, fuel managment will be my most expensive project...

man, we have an expensive hobby ... (hand)

Yes it is expensive. Apexi SAFCII will not work.... and to try to get it to work would be too much effort. The MPI Tuner is very popular... it can control timing and fuel, and install is easy (from what I hear). Private Message forum member MPNick or visit www.modernperformance.com for a phone number. The other setups might not be ideal for you... with a built engine and all.

We have 3 cars running the Microtech systems and the most powerful FS-DE Protege motors I have heard of run the Microtech... there are several 500+ whp FS's in Puerto Rico. The systems are reliable and can be run with anything for injectors (no restriction on high impedance or low impedance). Also, you don't replace any stock sensors and the installation takes about an hour and a half from start to finish for the whole system. I also walk new users through the first startups via the phone and can teach you tuning basics off the bat as well. We have base maps right now that run any 550cc injector equipped motor, and we have a roughed in stock injector map which I will be improving in the next weeks as well. So all in all it is a complete solution and the cost with the laptop software and everything you need is 1200. Also, you can add or swap the option to run a hand or dash unit which allows you to do all the tuning WITHOUT a laptop.

The Microtech is also a 32bit system, has an ignition system option for replacing all your stock coils and wires... and a lot of other goodies not offered by anyone else at this point. I believe it also has the highest resolution for the money, and with a minor upgrade can even go to ridiculous resolutions that far exceed what you need.

Later!

from what i have heard, the mpi makes for a great daily driver since it uses your stock injectors + additional injectors which does not cause "big injector problems". regardless, find the system that best suits what you want out of the car, im sure each system has pros and cons. that microtech mentioned above sounds pretty good 2, but its more than the mpi.

Yep MPI is a great low cost solution. I recommend it as well. And Nick will certainly take care of you.

And as I've stated before, and now posted videos to prove... there is NO big injector problem... I've started and idled without issue now from 38 degrees to 87 degrees, cold, warm, and everything in between with as good or better than stock startup and driveability. With 550cc primaries in the stock locations. :D

Would getting any of these engine management products help out alot if I am staying at stock boost, or would it even be neccessary?

d.

They will all yield gains for you. It will vary depending on what mods you have, how good you are at tuning, etc.

Wasn't there some magazine article where they were using the apexi. I can't remember now, maybe I am getting my products confused. They put on an exhaut and intercooler in the same article i believe.

we got the apexi safc to work way back in the day on my turboed mx6 fsde motor...had to build a translator to change the voltage going into the safc then another one to translate it back out...after all was said and done we had spend nearly $600 and 3 months of developement for a bunch of "pretty blue lights"....

There is proof for ya. My local tuners will not mess with it.

You should get DSMConvert's AFC (Air Fuel Controller). It is really inexpensive, and smooths out your powerband, acceleration, etc. It will also get rid of hesitation. It is perfect for the stock car looking for an overall performance increase. This does not mean you will get 200whp just because you added this (and the same goes with a lot of EMS units)... what they do is maximize what you have on your car now by controlling the air/fuel mixture in your engine. Someone on here just posted their air/fuel curve from a recent dyno... DSMConvert's AFC provided a very smooth curve which is hard to come by for around $300. Can't beat it really.
If you are looking for lots of power down the road, and are going to build the engine... more rhobust units are out there to look at (that control timing as well as AFR).

Peace out bitches.
