Engine Break In

I have about 700 miles on my speed3, and I've been trying to do my best to baby her, and let me tell you, it's a battle! I'm curious if anyone has any specific advice for breaking in the engine. I've searched the forum quite a bit and haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. What I'm really curious to find out is how long I really have to wait before I can truly open 'er up...

i got the good warranty and right away been hittin hard, its honestly probably beter car gets used to running hard and everything gets worn in nice. jstu like dirt bike...ride em hard at first n they turn out faster mroe responsive......i have the 75,000 6 year warranty so i dont have much to worry about with only 400 miles on it so far......if u got the good warranty gas it have fun thats what u bought the car for....

I'm gonna do what the manual says. The same way with all my previous cars. 600 miles isn't much.. compared to some who recommend 1000-1200+

I say drive it like your gonna drive it

I agree...Ive heard that theres no actual "break in" period needed on new cars anyways. Im mean whats the point anyways? If your gonna run it hard later hows it gonna help to run it easy when its new? Isnt running it hard later just gonna mess it up just as easily, if not more so, than when its new? Ive had my car sence brand new and ive drove it the same way every day sence, no problems what so ever. New parts perform better anyways dont they? Running hard on a warn down engine seems worse off than running hard on a brand new engine doesnt it?

PS. So what if you f it up anyways? Its under warranty! lol

thats what i said, its cool goin fast but once that gas gauge goes down ull learn to moderate urself on that pedal

yep, unless you got the money for gas! lol, but a 75k or 6 year is a hell of a long warranty...just watch how much you mod your car with that warranty, and keep all your stock parts that you have removed just incase you need to un do something that messed your car up before you take it in. My exteded warranty just recently expired on my 02 and its mod time now!!! Instead of making car payments I get to make mod payments!

Does it count if I change the oil as soon as I get it home to get that nasty factory oil outa it??? I think so...

yea i kno im gona buy the mazda exhaust and cold air intake , bov online but ima gona keep old parts. im nto gona do anything serios until i figure what i can do without voiding the warranty. hopefully mazda comes out with turbo upgrades n stuf liek dodge did with the srt-4 neons. i wrote mazda headquarter online and they are going to reply soon with info. ill put some on here w/e i find out.

yeah, I think if they are mazda performance parts the part itself isnt warranted but it doent void anything else.

yea i kno, im gona buy the exshaust and intake throught mazda and get the blow off valve online , this guy at mazda bought a kit for 300 hks and it has the lil mount piece. and if i need to go to the dealer il just switch it . a sales man told me bov doesnt void tho, because its good for the turbo.

hmm..i hope the mototune is correct. i just had my motor finally runnig. i haven't driven it, but i would like to follow the mototune way. anyone against this? ...it's a fully built block, but i'm a bit leary of ******* up the car i've spent so much time on...

I agree with Motoman 100%. I actually witness it first hand. THese 2 brothers had identical 4 wheelers. One road his very hard from day one. the other babied it. They eventually raced a lot and hte one who road his hard from day one always blew his doors off. I didnt know why at the time but it all makes sense after readinghis article.

I am gonnna follow his break in suggestions.

I followed mototune hard break-in procedure on my P5, 50k miles so far not a single prob and never get less than 26 mpg no matter how hard I drive it!

If I get the MS3 I'll do the same again
did you follow the mototune DYNO, or the mototune STREET break in process?

I planned on doing the 600 mile break-in period just like the manual said until I raced an EVO VIII pulled up next to me and gave me the look :).

I've had 2 brand new cars in the past. One '97 civic ex and '03 Protege5. I was never able to get pass the 500-1000 mile break-in. Good thing the car never gave up on me or gave me any sort of problem. Especially my civic. It had 80K miles and was running nitrous on that thing for 2-3 years :). It had 120K on the clock when I sold it for a hatch back in 2000.

Back to topic.
What the dealer told me was go easy on the throttle and brakes. You can drive 90 mph just don't use your CC or don't keep that speed for a long time. Don't high rev the engine either. That's all !

well the only issue i'm worried about is the break in of the clutch at the same time. i guess during the mototune way i can get into it on a new clutch, but i can't bang gears..anyone?

Not that the mototune guy is wrong but you would think the engineers who managed to design the Mazda engine, etc. would know something about breaking an engine in when they recommended 600 miles of no redline... and the breakin period and process is more than just for the engine... the brakes need proper break-in, tranny/axle/wheel bearings... the dont drive at a constant speed isnt intended solely for the engine.... I dont think driving it softly or hard is the key but varying the type of loads and speeds over a moderate engine rpm range..... but thats just my two cents...
