Drivetrain lash...worries

Thanks! I appreciate the pics.

Hmm. I feel like my problem might be clutch chatter. I've searched around and some have described similar behavior.

Thanks for the idea. About where is the throttle cable located?

This feels like wheel hop, except it's when I try to back out or move slowly around a parking lot. Does yours feel that way?

Hey Sveivo,

It was the flywheel/clutch combo. I haven't had any problems since changing the clutch/machining the flywheel. The machinist stated that the flywheel was warped, ever-so slightly and he said that that would've been enough to give such violent clutch chatter.

Yup, that was the feeling I got. Wheelhop...Exactly!

While searching for a clutch replacement, I had trouble because there are some clutches (high performance, with stiffer engagement, racing) which are difficult to engage and can cause a feeling similar to what I experienced and you seem to be experiencing.

Because of this and because I decided that I wasn't going to do anything else to the car, go-fast-wise, I made the decision to get an OEM replacement clutch from EXEDY; and instead of buying a lightened flywheel just had the flywheel machined.

Jetman, what you're proposing won't work if his problem is in fact clutch chatter. While attempting to diagnose the problem myself, at home, I went through the same test without getting an answer. You're right about one thing...the engine will not move nearly as much with the new mounts.

Thank you for posting back so quickly. I guess I need to figure out what to do with the car now.

I will keep everyone update on what I decide to do.

I know...I was kinda lucky, I know a mechanic who works for not too much $$ and I searched the parts out myself.

I paid...

$165 for the EXEDY
$ 65 machining the FW
$150 for the labour

I wish I had the space and tools to do it me-self...(rockon)

Good luck!

Good info, thank you sir.

i got the same problem.... I do believe its the clutch though. I have all four engine mounts torn up i thought that would be the problem. But not anymore because your having the same problem with upgraded mounts....

I also get it at low rpms when i try to take off slowly but its very intermentint and doesn't hapen all the time. It also happens when the road is wet and i try to take off fast but i believe this is wheel hop instead.

Im going to upgrade my motor mounts because its cheaper than purchasing a new clutch. Will see if this fixes my problem but i doubt it after reading this thread..... Must be the clutch.

Sorry it's happening to you too man! Got to be the clutch. I just did some testing and I found a way to take off decently without getting the crazy wobble. It's just a workaround though. I see a new clutch in my future. For right now I figure I will just ride this clutch until it's done or until I lose patience. Whichever comes first ;)

My mounts are definitely stiff because I did the test thejetman recommended. I revved the engine while under the hood. Also I found a perfect viewpoint to see if my engine moves at startup, as I crank the car.

Well, the motor does not move AT ALL. So it's got to be the clutch.

Best of all to you.

;)

give it 500 miles. break it in nice. no hard starts and race shifting. you will waste that 1k then. after i replaced my clutch with a stage II and lightweight flywheel (at the same time i did the mounts) it took about 500-600 miles before it started to grab hard and really see the effects of the work i did.(idhitit)
I've had the front mount in there for about over a month now. The rear has been in for about 3 weeks or so. Perhaps they will break in more.

they will, especially if you got a new clutch and flywheel. I love the combo i have. It is a ZOOM brand Stage II clutch (it is a four-puck configuration), ZOOM brand light weight flywheel (-7 or -8 pounds) AWR brand mounts ( all but the rear, cause its a PITA) and a motor with only 20xxx miles on it!!!!!!!!

Sounds like a solid combo. I am looking forward to upgrading. Who carries Zoom brand?

AdvanceAuto....it was just shy of 4 bills for the parts. The labor was free because i was havin the engine installed at the same time. It was 1100 quoted for the clutch and my local guy.

hmm new mounts are in and i can still feel a little jerking/slipping/hoping or whatever the hell it is. still only happens once in a while only when trying to take off a little to slow. hmm new clutch and flywheel to the wishlist.

I've gotten a little better at driving since I put the mounts in. But it definitely takes some getting used to.
