Does replacing a steering wheel affect the hands off detection?

The CX-5 model I have has the Lane Keep Assist System (LAS), which assists the driver in steering the car to be in the center of the lane. From what I read on the web, the system can detect and sound an alarm when the driver removes his hands from the wheel. I'm considering to replace the steering wheel to a non-Mazda one. Does anybody know whether this will prevent the hands off detection from working properly? How does hands off detection in CX-5 work?

In the US it looks at lane paint and "rumple" sounds when you approach a lane line without using your turn signals. I don not think it detects when you turn the wheel loose...
