Living near the bars and clubs for 600 is not really doable. I live off Greenville Ave and Mockingbird, very nice part of town with several resteraunts and clubs within walking distance. I live in a 2 bedroom duplex and pay just over $1000 a month. If you move a little further north you can get a nice 1 bedroom apartment for around $650-900. If you move up north to richardson/plano area you can get a killer apartment for the same price range. You could also rent a small house (2 bedroom) for $900-$1100 in the richardson area.
Most of the good rest/club scene in dallas is either;
A) Deep Ellum area - directly east of Downtown. There are several lofts for rent here, but none are cheap.
B) Lower Greenville ave (M Streets) - this is where I live. You can get a 1 bedroom duplex for around $800 a month here. i like it cause it's 2 minutes away from the 3 major highways (635, 75 and 30) and walking distance from several bars/clubs. The crowd here is mostly from SMU (college) which is located around Mockingbird and 75.
c) Addison area around Beltline and the North Dallas Tollway. I don't go up there much, it's usually either an older or yuppieish crowd at those places. But apartment prices are reasonable. I have 2 friends with aprtments near there, both 1 bedroom, 2 story places with a garage (3 stories if you count the garage). one pays $750 the other $850 a month.
Any of these areas would be much nicer than what i remember East aurora being 10 years ago.
If you're willing to drive a bit more look into the Arlington area or around Fort Worth. I'm not familiar with any of the scenes there.
Here's some areas to stay away from:
1) Anything within 1 block north or south of 635 between Hillcrest and Abrams
2) Oak Cliff area. Some spots are nice, but you usually have to drive through some pretty shady ones to get there. Prices are really cheap though.
3) Anything just south of I 30 and East of 45. - Once you get far enough away from the city it get nice, but then you have a commute from hell every morning.
If I were you I'd look at areas around SMU. You could probably find some college student looking for roomates. Then you could live there for 6 months while you scope out the city and find a better place for yourself.
