difference between the different available engines for a 2006 mazda3

Can anyone tell me if there is any difference between the 2.3L long block for
1. Automatic vs. manual tranmission
2. std emissions and low emissions (calif)

I am trying to buy a used engine and I am not sure if it will be compatable.

Thanks

Not sure there's a difference vis a vis the tranny interface, but there are differences regarding emissions as the Cali engine is PZEV certified. Not sure precisely what those differences are, though. :/ It's possible it's mostly settings in the ECU.. (dunno)

Anyone else?

I think the sticky just posted by the moderator answered the question that the block is the same for man/auto/std emissions/low emissions for a given year of engine for a mazda3 2.3 L

Can anyone confirm?

I was going to ask the same question for an '04 Maz3. My mechanic just called. The shiny reman 2.3 arrived today with "automatic" on the box, even though it was ordered as an engine for a manual. His question, and mine, is "what's the difference?" Secondary to that is, if you're swapping engines anyway, is it a matter of a few bolts and gewgaws and doodads, or is there something in the block or internals that's different?

How's that for a needy first post?
