Didn't know to use ATF for power steering system...

Hey there folk, I didn't know that I was supposed to use ATF as opposed to power steering fluid in my 2003 Protege ES, and am looking for some guidance of how to most easily and safely (for the car's sake, I'll heal) replace all the current fluid in my power steering system. I obliviously used Royal Purple for Hondas and Japanese vehicles I believe, and I can't seem to get the power steering whining to subside if that's any help to how to approach this situation. drain and refill with atf. See if that helps with noise.
