Going to start a dash cam thread here.
Anything caught on your dash cam in the CX-5 feel free to post here.
Post anything you may wish to :)

I'll start:
Saw a head on collision today, camera doesn't catch it but the sound of the impact is rather audible.

Cheers from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada

Which dash cam are you using ?
I'd like to hear recommendations too. I've seen the super-inexpensive $30 ones, but I'm not sure if they work well enough. And yet I don't want to pay hundreds for one either. Just wish there was something in-between. And one with a long enough cord to wrap all the way around the headliner, down the trim, under the dash and to the venter accessory socket (don't want a cord to be dangling).

I like the quality of the video and am very much interested in getting the dash cam. For now I have read positive reviews about the blackvue unit but will wait for "jeremy44" to chime in before I go spend $$$

I actually got the dash camera in Hong Kong for approx $50-60 Canadian Dollars. Not sure what the model is, but I will take a picture of it tomorrow for reference. I would shy away from the cheap ones as my friend had one and the SD card kept on getting corrupted and the camera is not sharp enough to even capture license plates. I think the one I have was a pretty good deal as it can record up to 1080P.
Also look for ones that will delete the old clips automatically to make way for new clips.

Yesterday night at 4 degrs i have dash problem when i drive in the bad street.

Problem with any camera is they don't cope well with sun, just something to consider.

I have an iTronics ITB 100HD. It records speed and location (can see location on a map when using the specific software). Sadly the speed is only displayed in KPH on the video, but you can set the program to display MPH, just not the actual video itself.

Here's a video of it in action:

I know I posted a link to this site before, but I figure that not everyone saw it. This site is the best English language resource regarding dash cams that I have found:

http://dashcamtalk.com/

I don't yet have one myself, but I kick myself for not buying one of the Itronics when they were $180.

You can get a different firmware that has the speed displayed in MPH instead. I think that the guy who wrote is sells it for $8 or something like that. I know there information about it on the FAQ page for that model cam at the link above.

If you have an Android smartphone there is DailyRoads Voyager. I think I paid like $5 for it, it works fine. Definitely draws down the battery--need a power connection to use it much.

Hello All...

I fixed a GoPro adhesive mount just behind the rear vision mirror. I use either a Hero2 or Hero3 camera and log my drives.

I was thinking of a dash cam for my wife's CX-9, but amazingly the vast majorit are no name brands. Saw an article on this lamenting the fact that the big names are missing a big opportunity in making a nice dash cam.

It seems that the only option is to loom at Amazon and look at the most popular and take a gamble. So I haven't bought anything yet. The GoPro does not loop the video once the card is full, so not really an option.

This one looks really really good, I ordered it, should be arriving soon. Hopefully the wires are long enough I can route it like another guy in the How To thread with his Valentine 1 radar.

Check out the link to Dash Cam Talk that I posted on the first page of this thread - it has a comparison of most available models, as well as an active forum. Yes, they are all either Chinese or Korean for the better ones. None are brands that we would recognize in the States it is true. This is going to be a far better source of info than Amazon.

Installed the 808 #18 DR32 yesterday.

I just installed a dash cam DVR that is built into a larger add on rear view mirror. It is available on eBay but I decided to order from Amazon at this link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)
I used the approach in the How To section about installing a Valentine 1 radar detector and placed a female lighter plug it the fuse area to plug the power supply into. The advantage of the rearview unit is that it is almost invisible from outside the car so hopefully no one will break in the car to get it. This unit puts about an hour of driving on a 4 Gig mini SD card at 720P 30fps but it supports up to a 32G card so you can record about 8 hours if you want to before it wraps around. The quality of the recording is OK but you can not usually read license plates. The sound is good though and you can read the plates to the machine so they will be recorded with the picture. The sound does pick up some static from rough roads. You can hear the turn signal blinker at low speeds but not at high speeds. The usb power plugin on the mirror unit seems a bit sensitive and may have contributed to me having to spend some time getting the menus to work so I could configure it to my desire but once done, it seems to work fine. Be careful installing the memory card, I dropped a black one in the car while sitting in the front seat and spent about 30 minutes with a drop light looking for it and finally wrote it off. It fits OK and does not interfere with the sun visors or the top console. I configured it to show the recording in the mirror for the first 2 minutes so I would see that it was working and then it becomes a rear view mirror. When you stop it post a 2 second goodbye screen and closes the current recording file.
