Cycle carrier for Mazda 5

Hi, I am looking to get a rear mounted cycle carrier for my 2010 Mazda 5 but I'm being told that the plastic spoiler makes it impossible. Does anyone have any ideas if it is possible to get one? Thanks

you are limited to installing a hitch and using a hitch mount rack or a roof mounted carrier trays. Doesn't the euro Mz5 come with roof rack? If so, you would need cross bars and roof mounted carrier trays. I have both and the hitch system works WAAAAYYYY better. BUT if you already have the roof rack, the cross bar and carrier tray could be the easiest/safest route with minimal cost that you can carry over to other cars. Limitations are that it can be a pain to secure the bikes up top and you need to be mindful of low clearances.

I also have an old tail-gate bike carrier. They work perfectly fine for up to 2 bikes. Used it on my previous sedans and Miata with no problems. But that are not suitable for Mz5 due to the spoiler being in the way.

Class 1 hitch on MZ5 with 1.25 inch receiver would be limited (reasonably) to a bike rack for 2 bikes. Probably not a good idea to get a hitch adapter that allows you to use hitch racks for 2 inch receiver. Puts the weight further out from the hitch and more stress on the light duty hitch with 200lb tongue weight rating.

You can spend $200-400 for roof rack then $80-150 apiece for roof bike racks. Or spend $120-150 for class 1 hitch and another $150-200 for hitch bike rack. You're in it for the same amount either way.

We went with the 1.25" hitch and Thule Helium Aero 2 bike model that weighs only 25lbs as its made out off aluminium. It also has 3 quick release points, built in lock for the hitch and the bikes.

Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top model F2.

Clears the spoiler, and quite sturdy. I bought mine several months ago, but I installed it for the first time a few days ago. It's off now, or I'd take a pic, but see the link for info.

I would say go with a hitch mount. I had the trunk mount on my SAAB 9-3 back in the day, and it was a pain. Plus, I was always worried the metal hooks would mess up the paint.
