CX-90 PHEV Aftermarket audio upgrade question

I bought a CX-90 PHEV last Friday. Always wanted Premium Audio but budget limits me to the Preferred Trim because the Premium cost $4500 more without offering anything I like besides the upgraded audio. Does anyone know what I can do to upgrade the 8-speaker low end audio system of the Preferred trim. I don't think I need more speakers from 8 to 12 like in the Premium and Premium Plus. Just want to replace them with better and compatible components that won't have any side effect.

I doubt you can replace/improve a system so integrated. Cars these days make it hard to use 3rd party system like the past as the infotainment systems are much tighter integrated with other car features. It's a way for car manufacturers to lock you in.

When I removed the spare tire which I thought that's where the stock passive subwoofer is, there is none. I assume there is a cheap passive subwoofer among the 8-speakers of Preferred trim somewhere in the car. I don’t think the Bose Premium audio comes with an active subwoofer (that has a separate powered amp) but I can be very wrong. I aim to replace the stock subwoofer with a better one of the same size that can be put in the same place, coupled with a simple sub crossover.

I have the top of the line CX-90 PHEV with the subwoofer in the spare tire rim. It's crazy heavy. I bet if you contacted the company Crutchfield, they might have a solution. The issue will be the wiring back to the OEM entertainment unit. Crutchfield would most likely know how to handle that. Good luck.

I have watched several youtube videos about installing an active subwoofer including one from Crutchfield. I'd prefer running the low level signal RCA cable from the stock radio/receiver instead of from the rear speakers in the doors to minimize connections. This model is pretty new so info is not yet available. I am not sure the stock radio/receiver has a RCA output though. I might choose to put the active subwoofer next to and not in the spare tire rim. There seems to be enough space around the spare tire to place it.

Yes you could get a device to take signals from the rear channels to power the sub. Be careful though so it’s not evident. While under warranty you need to be mindful Mazda can deny and electrical issue if they discover you altered the original system. Highly unlikely they would catch that but be careful taking door panels off to get to the speakers.

Quite curious about the description of this unit. Looks like a Pioneer unit but the sound is very timid. The Bass is virtually non-existent, hi and mid range is not clear even though I have set fading to the front. Not aiming to buy, just try to figure out how I can upgrade the non-Bose OEM audio system in my CX-90 PHEV Preferred trim in the easiest and least intruding way and with the expected outcome.

The Pioneer amp is made Thailand, the front speakers are made in Japan, and the rear speakers are made in Vietnam. And most confusing is they are name SUBWOOFER. There is nothing subwoofer about these speakers as I can see.

These speakers sure look cheap. No wonder the sound is poor.

@thoxtran Based on this, are there any ideas for potential upgrades of the existing speakers at least? Looks like 25W @ 4 ohms.

Honestly, I am not so sure installing just the Subwoofer somehow enhancing the mid and hi range as well. Hope someone can explain. Replacing all speakers might be too intruding particularly the front speakers do have mounting assembly that after-market speakers might not just fit in seamlessly. The rear speakers mounting assembly seem easier to fit the replacement.

From the pricepoint, the front spakers cost quite a bit and I hope they are not that bad, the rear ones look cheap and are cheap, so it's more logical to upgrade the rear speakers.

I recently used the Setting -> Sound -> Advanced mode to use Custom Setting. This Custom setting allows me to change individual frequencies from 40 to 25K Hz and it improves the sound quite a bit compared with selecting Preset setting Pop, Jazz, Rock, Classic, ...

@thoxtran I just found this thread and wanted to let you know I'm going to be doing a custom build for my 2024 CX90. I'll you know how it goes, but I'm replacing everything...3 way components up front, 2 way in the rear, subs...audiocontrol etc. I'll let you know how it goes.

I've done this in other cars but not my CX-90 as I have the Bose system which is superb. Besides, I leased the vehicle so can't do any upgrades like that unless they are all hidden.

@matt9875 It would be super cool if you could create a new thread to document your CX-90 audio build...I know I'd love to see it!

I plan to. The biggest challenge nowadays is getting around the integrated systems. I may even bypass it all and go with an Ipad controlled system. Not sure yet, ut I'll definitely keep ya'll in the loop. It seems there are no custom builds for a 2024 CX90 that I've seen yet. Plan on 3 way separates up front (Focal or MB Quart or German Meastro), and 2 way separates in the back doors. I need to keep the utility of the vehicle so the sub placement will be interesting, and not yet known. This will be an audiophile system, not a boom boom system, so a few 10"s will be all I need. The front door install will be the most work, but the 6 1/2 " mid bass in the 3 ways should fit nicely in those doors. Again, I'll try my best to keep it all together and inform everyone.

I had the Bose in my previous car, and yes, for a factory radio it was very good. I used to be into car audio...like REALLY into car audio back in the heyday of MB Quart PP, Orion, Etc. I've had 3 or 4 aftermarket systems and, as good as the best factory systems can be, nothing compares to a well built, powerful, separate components, amps, etc, system. I know you're well aware I'm sure, but it's hard not to have one once you have one. My goal is replicate that experience now with my CX90. I'll let everyone know how it goes...will start a new thread once it begins.

I used to have a 24 year old Benz CLK-320 with Bose system, one of the best audio I have heard. At home I still have a Mark Levinson ML-9 which is also very old but still sounds like new. So I do love a bit of sound quality. Unfortunately, money comes in between. Sold the Benz to buy the CX-90 PHEV. Really miss those Made in USA old timers.
