CX-70 Driving Impressions

CX-70 Turbo S P+, Color: Polymetal Gray Metallic
This is for those that have spent some time driving this big boy. I’ve had it now for a couple weeks and here are a few things I’m experiencing that would be good if others can confirm the same:

  • I’m noticing some bit of turbo lag in Normal mode. I was expecting it would not be so noticeable in an inline 6. Sport mode has a kick to it for sure. What’s interesting is that if I’m in normal and use the paddle shifters, I don’t notice it and it certainly feels it has better acceleration
  • The brakes is a little soft. I suppose this is like a personal preference type of thing but when I apply brakes I would expect a bit more pressure and not have it glide to stop.
  • Sometimes while driving I feel like I’m drifting towards the lane edges, sorta floaty. It could be me as I’m still getting use to the steering and having a much bigger vehicle coming from a much smaller compact suv.
  • My tire pressure reads 50 psi in the infotainment system. I have a dealer included option which added nitrogen in my tires. The manual says it’s should be 36 psi for these 275 R45 21. Should I talk to my dealer about this or it’s ok because of the nitrogen?
  • I live in the suburbs and normally it’s 10 - 15 miles to and from most places I need to go. I was expecting to get more than 18-20 MPG. Is there an engine break-in period where this will get better over time?
  • Not a driving thing but minutes after the vehicle has been powered off, I still hear mechanical activity from somewhere on the front side. Any idea what that could be?

Lower your tire pressure. Regardless of the gas in the tires, the pressure should be closer to the spec'd 36psi. Some dealers miss that step in the prr-delivery inspection process. Wouldn't hurt to verify with your own tire pressure gauge as well just to be sure.

It's common for the vehicles to be turning off components a bit after the vehicle is turned off.

For the brakes, first thing I would check is the brake fluid level. If it's low, you'll have excessive brake pedal travel. If the fluid level is normal, you can try bedding the brakes in, similar to the processes most brake pad manufacturers have in their packaging. Find a long, empty stretch of road, and do 5 moderate to hard stops from 45 mph to 5-10 mph. Do them back to back with no breaks in between. Then, do 5 moderate to hard stops from 25 mph to 5mph, allowing the car's breaks to cool down a bit in between (maybe 1-2 mins between each stop). Then hop on the highway and drive for 5-10 mins to let the brakes cool down before you go home and park it.

The steering should feel much better after you lower the tire pressure closer to 36 psi. Traction may also improve, especially in wet conditions.

Mileage will get better the more you drive. Not necessarily due to the engine breaking in, but more due to the car's transmission learning from how you're driving it. Keep in mind that the mileage in the trip computer is calculated from the miles travelled, so it only has a couple of weeks of driving under it's belt to calculate that number.

50 PSI is way too high. I would adjust that ASAP.

I personally have found that with all my Mazda vehicles, and we have a lot, their gas mileage guts much better after 3-4K miles (after the first oil change).

With that said, driving a car from cold, only 10-12 miles, in the city, and never really letter it warm up will never be great for mileage.

Alright, I appreciate all the feedback. First priority is to get the tire pressure stuff situated and see how it drives afterwards. I’m use to adding air and not taking it away so will figure out the best way to do that safely and efficiently.

I’m experimenting with different premium fuels from the vendors to see if any one gives me better mileage; but I guess there is no shortcut for just driving it more and allow it to learn and adjust

As far as fuels go, any Top Tier gasoline will suffice, but if you're in the US, I've heard that Chevron has one of the best additive packages. I'm in Canada, and I prefer Shell.

Drive a 2025 CX-70 GT with 21" tires.
Lovely I6 sound and pickup 🥺
Ride is jarring on broken roads but smooth on highway.
Fairly quiet but could use insulation 🤞
I have 2024 CX-5 and feels almost similar nvh wise but engine louder. I love the CX-70 cargo room and big engine option in a class of small turbo 4s.
For $58k CAD pretax it's a great SUV. Heck, a Honda CR-V Touring costs more...
😫🤨

2025 Honda CR-V Touring Hybrid is $51k starting. Are dealers marking them up?

I feel the same with the 21” wheels, I was really hesitant about my purchase but I didn’t like the flat black wheel well trim which by the way comes with the smaller wheels and tires. So I got the turbo s premium.
I knew beforehand that the bigger tires would not be smooth ‘coz I had 20” on my x5.

They need to soften the ride if they wanna go after an X5. Should offer adaptive and air suspension setup. 🤤 Team up with Arnott to deliver quality air suspension 🚟 😃

Oh yeah, adaptive suspension should be available.
I had air suspension on my e53 x5 and Im probably one of lucky few who didn’t have major issues with it until I reached 188,000 miles. Gen 1 x5 have very few problems.

My driving experience with the CX 70 in-line six high output version.

The vehicle is very heavy. I’m coming from a CX five. The power in the CX 70 is adequate can’t wait to put a tune on it. And definitely want to go down to 18 inch rims to get that extra power and better breaking due to less weight on the rotating mass (wheels).

When taking around turns, I definitely use the sports button, but you can still feel the weight of this suv but Mazda does a good job planting these vehicles.

With the CX-5 felt better to control and was able to take turns that I normally take with the CX 70 at much faster. Also. I was able to get to CX five airborne without much issues on the bridge but the CX 70 just does not seem to wanna get any air. I guess it’s all the weight.

But I didn’t buy this vehicle for speed and handling that’s what my toy car is for.
