CX-5 Muffer and Exhaust Leak Warranty?

:
BC, Canada

2017 CX-5 GS
I have found an exhaust leak right where the muffler connects to the pipe. I'll post a picture of the leak. I'm curious if anyone knows if this is covered under the limited powertrain warranty?

I trying to figure out if I should bring it into a dealership to get fixed or a private shop. If I can get it covered by the dealership that would be ideal.

Exhaust isn't covered under Fed emissions, and not under powertrain either, however I suppose goodwill from the dealer is a possibility.

And I'd never be willing to call any rust job underneath the vehicle 'easy', until after the work has been completed. It's unusual to see an exhaust component gasket just blow out like that, and the pics makes it appear that the middle of the flange is slightly bowed. And although that might just be an optical illusion, the question of why the gasket separated and blew out still remains.

Yes.

Totally agree.

Yes, and see the link above ⋯

I would wonder if this can be covered under federal emission warranty...
The OP is in Canada so it would be under whatever emission laws are up there. But even in the US an exhaust leak would not be covered under the EPA statutes. Most emission parts are warranted for up to two years anyway (a few are 8 years). Now if it was the cat, that might be different since that is an actual emissions component.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to give the dealership a call Monday morning, but from looking at the warranty details it may not be covered in the powertrain warranty.

Looks like it may be a tough job so I'll leave it to a shop

Don't forget to mention that an exhaust leak can get into the cabin and put you to sleep, permanently.

Does this leak come with (a difference in) noise (e.g. during acceleration)?
You should be able to hear the puff noise at the leaking location of the exhaust system if you’re near by. You may even be able to feel some air coming out of the leaking point when engine is idling. And you may be able see some black mark around the leaking area too.
