Thought I would post that I just had a custom exhaust installed on my Mazda3. I did not want a loud system, just a high flowing system with plenty of torque for daily driving but a little more power. I decided to change out the muffler to a straight through Magnaflow (2.25" in/out, 5"x8" Oval, P/N: 12225), left the stock pipes before and after, left on the stock resonator as it is straight through, and installed a flanged test pipe in place of the second cat for track use. I had a flange installed on the stock cat exit so it is swappable easily in 15 min on ramps. Each side of the flange has a thick gasket and is sealed tightly. The sound is great. Absolutely no droning. Very quiet with the stock cat on, slightly louder without but definately not a loud system at all. No buzzing. Deep and gurgly all throughout the revs. Definately a noticeable power increase and better throttle response. Best of all, its not at all ricey or crappy sounding and even the added header noise will be very tolerable and sedated, plenty of volume to gain without problems here. Cost: $200 total with the stainless muffler. 2.25" pipe might have helped a little more, but when the header goes on next, I'm sure the 4cyl will be able to breathe more than enough. Also, warranty remains and legality remains with a ten min cat switch. (drive) (Black pipe is the test pipe with 1200 degree temp paint cured onto it)
