Cost of service @ dealership

At my dealership in BC they charge $60 for the 8000km/4mo service, which includes the following:

Replace engine oil; Replace oil filter
Inspect function of all lights
Inspect brake fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid and coolant level
Inspect all tires inflation and wear
Lubricate all locks and hinges
Rotate tires (priced separately)

But they charge $240 for the 24000km/12mo service:

all of the above plus
Inspect and clean brake discs and pads, front and rear
Lubricate caliper rails/pins
Inspect A/C operation

I can't justify paying that much for them just to inspect/clean the brakes and lubricate the calipers. Did I miss something???
 
I believe the 24,000 service should include a wheel alignment too. I can't remember if they actually change the brake fluid or not.
 
Of all my cars over the years, I have never seen this service performed:

Yes, it is a provided service at each interval but the dealer never actually performs the service. Heck, when I owned my 1997 F-150 I found out at 30k miles that the wheels had never been balanced and rotated, despite my service records stating the contrary.
 
Has anyone lubricated their calliper pins on the CX5? On the older Mazda 3's you would simply unbolt the pin and the whole thing would come out. Put some lube on, and bolt it back in. The CX5 seems to have a separate design and I'm not sure how big of a pain it is.

You are right in saying $240 is a rip off for the whole deal though.

Scratch that. Found a picture in the service manual and it's pretty much the same, except you need to slide part of the calliper out of the way to pull the pin out that you need to lube. Should be a quick job for anyone semi-mechanically inclined.

Replace engine oil; Replace oil filter (anyone with a ramp or jack stand can do this...should be plenty of clearance) - Total parts if conventional oil + filter, maybe $25 bucks. Synthetic then $35.
Inspect function of all lights (turn lights off and on, takes 2 secs)
Inspect brake fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid and coolant level (peek into it, 2 minutes, top off if needed for washer and coolant)
Inspect all tires inflation and wear (look or check with gauge, 5 minutes)
Lubricate all locks and hinges (if they actually do this, it's just a quick spray on each door, 30 secs per door)
Rotate tires (priced separately) - if you have tools, can easily do it. If not, did you drive enough miles that rotation is needed?

But they charge $240 for the 24000km/12mo service:

all of the above plus
Inspect and clean brake discs and pads, front and rear (I have doubts that they actually do this)
Lubricate caliper rails/pins (I don't see pins needing to lubricate with such low mileage. I doubt they do this. Who's gonna check)
Inspect A/C operation (Turn ac on and off, takes 2 secs)

At least the pins on the cx5 appear to have a cover over them. The ones on the older mazda 3's were not and they did indeed get stupid dirty buildup.
 
Sounds like you all think this 24000km/12mo service it's not worth $240. I have a trusted mechanic that takes care of my other car. Would it void the warranty if I don't bring it back to the dealership for service? And since I am leasing the CX-5, would that affect the lease? I checked the lease agreement and it didn't say I have to.
 
In the US the manufacturer cannot require that you use their service department or their branded parts in order to honor the warranty. You just have to show that the work was done using equivalent parts. Don't know about Canada though. Also don't know specifically about leases, but if it's not in the agreement then it can't be required.
 
My dealer actually did lubricate all the locks and hinges on my car, and not with some spray either. When I picked the car up I could see the coating of lubrication that the tech applied on the hinges.

I am due for my 24000/12m service. it costs $240 at dealer. my car has only 10k on it. should I go with the lubricating joints,check break pads and A/C package or just go with oil and filter change? this 12m service seems to be a rip off for me

They have to honor the warranty regardless. It doesn't matter if you did the maintenance with them or not. If the engine fails, they'll have to replace the part that broke or the engine unless you haven't performed an oil change when you were supposed to. Dealership can't void the warranty as long as you don't modify the car or get into an accident or mess around with the vehicle yourself.
 
I work for a tire manufacturer and take my car to one of our service stores, and it's never voided an auto warranty by not having the stealer do the maintenance. Simple things like oil changes, you should be able to do yourself and still not void the warranty, as long as you have receipts to prove you did them.

Mine, lubricated at 400 miles. Not impressed by the amount of lube inside the caliper housing from the factory. Not very hard to do. You will need a 14mm socket/ ratchet or equivalent wrench to remove the bolts that go into the caliper pins, take off caliper from the bracket, and pull out the pins to lube. And I recommend a silicone based lube, such as Syl-Glide. You can't do this too soon to your brakes.
