Clutch making a whinning noise

03.5 Mazdaspeed
I just got a 2003.5 msp that has 8000kms. When I start the car and let go of the clutch, I start to hear a whinning sound. When I press the clutch in, the noise goes away. It sounds like something spinning stops. Meaning not stopping abruptly, but slowing down to a stop. I took it to the dealer. They said it's the pilot and release bearings that are just noisy on the Mazdaspeed. They said they tested it against two other vehicles they had in their lot and hear the same thing. They consider this normal operation. Does anyone else have this issue with theirs? The sound is more prominent when the engine is cold.

...

i have the same EXACT problem. it sounds so ******* bad now. i took it to the dealership and they said, if i may quote "just drive around until it breaks, because we have no idea what it is"...at idle it sounds horrible, push clutch in and it sounds brand new. i know its not a "normal sound" because it didnt do it when i bought the car and even the guys at the dealership said it wasnt normal. it sounds even worse when im coming to a stop and i have the clutch pushed in. no idea what it could be. someone plz help

Is it a whirring sound? If it is it could be the throw out bearing. Lots of cars make the same sound my old RX7's used to do it. I never had any issues with them they just made noise.
Mine has "whirred" for 10s of thousands of miles at 15PSI with 100's of hard launches and 83,000 miles with no ill affects. I know it is the throw out bearing in mine.

that BS i would threaten to drive the car through the dealership if they told me bulls*** like that at 8000 ks. Its their problem, if they say wait until it breaks then drive around the corner from the dealer and spin the tires until the tranny breaks, thatll teach those fuckers. Its a $20 part, they just dont want to take out the tranny so they will just keep bullshitting you cause well, you let them.

so i should tell them to look at the "throw out" bearing? someone else said that it could be the heat shield or some type of "bearing" but didnt specify. i want to get this cleared up. they are having a "specialist" come down from mazda corperate to test drive it. they said this is necessary before they do a tear down. i will mention it and see what they say

Its making noise because those parts need to be replaced. I have over 51K on my MSP and it does not make any clutch noise. Perhaps the original owner used to ride the clutch or hold it down at stop lights. That will wear out your throwout bearing.

BTW, I had the same problem!

HAD the same problem, took it to the dealer that is amazing and they told me whats wrong alright! They said that the Drive Shaft or something like that was cracked! and this was just after my LSD blew and they replaced it!

I would tell them to replace it NOW!!!

If you notice the noise gets worse in Second Gear no?

Yup Yup

My MSP makes no clutch noise. It's not "normal" for our cars and it should be fixed if it's under warranty.

What I'm hearing is that this is not normal, but some people do have it. Though we have it, there are no harmful effects. If that's the case, we might be better off not having a technician disturb the transmission. All too often, repairs snowball into other problems simply because of human error.

I have no idea what to do now. I thought that I won. They said they were going to pull the tranny out and replace the pilot and throw out bearings. They "claimed" that this was done and it didn't fix the problem one bit. It still makes the noise. However everyone I talk to tells me its the bearings, especially the throwout bearing. So I think I am going to take it to a different dealership.

I just took my car in for this on Monday. Got a call today and the dealer is ordering me a new transmission.

Update on clutch whirring

Well, as in the posts, my clutch was making the whirring noise. So I finally took it in to get looked at. What was needed were the bearings, pilot and something else. Anyway they also decided that I needed a new transmission. So that go replaced under warranty. The total bill was $135 CAD which includes labour and parts. Now I have to change the transmission fluid because they put that stock Mazda s*** back in. It's like shifting when the car was new, grind into second and can't get into reverse. Oh well, just an update.

my car has had the same problem for months, and like many other people i have been told it is just a normal sound. did having the dealer replace the tranny completely fix the problem?

Yes.

what do u think of the chances of them doing it under warranty is?

I don't know how good your dealership is but I got a little push back about the "abuse" thing and that if that was the case, then is wouldn't be under warranty. Luckily the service manager understood the type of car it was and told me "I'd be more dissapointed if the owner didn't drive the car the way it was meant to be driven."

That being said, the drivetrain warranty is longer, 5 years I believe and 80000km here in Canada. Mine was considered under drivetrain. Apparently there is a part that is not on the transmission itself and that I had to pay for. But it was less than $100 I think.

Having the whole transmission replace and not just taken apart and "fixed" is somewhat of a new policy here. At least that's what I was told. Cheaper I think. But the US might be different.

Good Luck!

ps. If you do get a new tranny, it will be TIGHT! And switch the s*** fluid that they put in there to something good. Otherwise be prepared to grind lots.

mine makes this horrible noise in the morining when i first start my car, the noise you guys are talking about and then i push the clutch in and it stops, but i does go away after a while but i noticed that it is alot worse when it is cold outside and if my car sits for awhile.

yeah the noise i am talking about is constant, never goes away, and is bugging the hell outta me.
