Anyone ever attempted to replace a clutch themselves? I was planning on doing it myself to save some $$. Any special tools i will need for the install? I would apreciate any tips and information from someone who has done this themselves. Thanks!

it's really not too hard.. impact/air guns are a great help..however not necessary. you'll need a torque wrench for the bolts(you can rent this at an advance auto or napa or w/e)...

just take your time.

i thought for that a special tool would be needed? i heard disconnecting CV joints can be a pain. was it a problem?

sounds like a job to me. lol a job without pay but a job someone has to do!
any other heads up on the disassembly, things i should look out for or is it pretty straight forward.

well it's pretty straight forward.. take off your wheel, unbolt the spindle(to pull out the axle shaft)unbolt the nut on the axle(those things are not all necessary..you can do it w/out unbolting that, but..it's easier)..
take off the trans mount, unbolt the bolts on the bellhousing.. take off clutch line, pull the trans away from block a bit(you dont have to take it off, but i do)as you slide it out, you'll need to angle it downwards..take off trans. you have full access at this point to the clutch/flywheel.

update: got half way through the project, if we would have had the parts i believe we could have finished it easily in one day. it took about 4 hours to the the transmission out with the help of that how to! that helped alot. it generally went really smooth only bump was disconnecting the drivers side transaxle out of the trans but a few tugs and working it around and it popped right out. so we got it out and brought the flywheel down the napa to get resurfaced then over to mazda to order the transaxle ds and ps oil seals. the ps one got trashed while trying to figure out how to get the transmission out. :/ not a problem that the car is up in the garage for a week though, i have surgery tomorrow and have to watch some friends finish it for me next weekend. thanks for your help!

it was pretty straight forward to remove the transmission. just take your time and keep track of all hardware. a bottle jack and a peice of wood to hold up the engine is a must. if you go through with the project feel free to ask any questions, i will be glad to help you out in any way possible.

I have the transmission completely unbolted, everything i could find is let go, but the transmission will not come off the engine. Any tips to get it off? I gave up 4am!
