Center channel

I was browsing the crutchfield website the other day and clarion makes a product that i'm interested in. It's a 1/2 din center channel speaker. It's powered, and takes rca inputs. What kind of head unit do i need to be able to use this, considering i already have 3 pairs of preouts being used (front, rear and sub)? do i need a deck with 4 sets of preouts? thanks for the help.

you need a 5.1 processor. if you were to run it off say the front RCA's, it will totally mess up the sound imaging.

i agree, ive seen allot more messed up sound stages with center channels then i have without, proper speaker placement up front will give you a phantom center channel.

i think center channels in a small car are useless. like sndsgood said, proper speaker placement will give you a phantom center channel.

I have only heard one car(excursion) with a center and it sounded cool watching movies in the front. But if you were in the back where the bigger screen was, it was pointless because you had 4 speakers/6 drivers from the doors contending with it. Music sounded pretty much the same as a regular car. All in all I thought it was pretty pointless. Save your pocket or get a EQ or a LCD if you want to use your extra DIN well.

I would say if you are going to get a center channel it woudl only be needed if you were going ot watch moives and had a dvd player with a 5.1 decoder. I woudl not worry to much about getting one.

Any more the only use for a center channel is if you put 5.1 in it. other than that is for larger cars to help the sound stage. for normal peeps It's not needed.
