my light went on today on a trip into town. code was P0126- Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Stable Operation-. has anyone got one of these and if so what was the cause and repairs needed? went by the dealer and made an appt for next friday. car runs fine, couldnt tell anything was wrong other then light on. i have my own code reader and did my own read, which p0126 was shown and reset it. will see if it comes on or stays off as an anomalous read. ill keep ya updated as i get it in the shop :)

On a Miata, this code usually means thermostat has failed (stuck open). Be interested to know if it's the same on a CX-5.

It could be a defective thermostat, does the blue temp light go off? Could be some manufacturing material stuck under the thermostat holding it open...

blue temp light does go off after what seems is the normal time (maybe a tad longer) and it seems to me (could be wacked in the head or not having it long to tell) that the mpg is down some. cel isnt blinking atm or running adversely. just not happy that the fact is they have to break open the factory sealed engine/components so they can see whats wrong with it. rather it not be broke and i go on my happy way..lol albiet slow(avg speed of 27.5 mph and 678 miles for 36 days owned) other then this, no sqeaks/vibrations/shimmys/knocks/shakes or such.

Sounds like you may not have ever had to deal with a CEL before. They simply plug a computer into the diagnostic port under the dash and read the code that's been thrown in order to determine what's wrong. The only time they "break open the factory sealed engine/components" is to make the actual repair. BTW, the blue idiot lite on the dash won't tell you diddly about this condition. You'd have to put a SmartGuage or similar device on the engine to track operating temps to see if they're within spec.

haha funny..ive been working on cars for quite some time. ive dealt with and repaired alot of cel/electical issues with cars/trucks. as i said..i have a code reader. just expressing my thoughts on a NEW car thats got issues at 500 miles. granted its a new vehicle and im one of the guinea pigs to own one, just not thrilled with engine/system work at this short of time in. please dont take my light hearted comments as ignorance of the issues my car is having atm.

This is definitely an isolated event. This is the first I have seen of this issue.

Agreed with the other assessments. P0126 would mean the engine never reaches full operating temp, before a predetermined amount of time has elapsed. Almost certainly means the tstat is stuck open.

Yes, so what caused it?

Being a new model vehicle buyer in 2012 doesn't mean you should expect to be a guinea pig, the reliability and durability testing should be done thoroughly before first customer shipment. Isolated event and or defect likely. Of course dissapointment to be expected with such a problem so soon.

I will admit that it seems like Mazda's t-stats suck.
They don't seem to last too long on the 2.3l DISI MZR.

If there was a 10 page thread with a couple dozen owners detailing this issue, I would say you'd be in the right mind to be upset.

Machines aren't perfect. Especially being designed by people...
The longevity of the modern automobile and its hundreds of thousands of components is actually quite astounding.
A t-stat hung open ought to be an issue repaired in a few hour's time. No biggie. s*** happens.
Mazda seems to put forth a great deal on engineering into their product. I don't think this is more than a isolated defect.
Afterall, the chances Mazda manufactures their own tstats is quite...slim.

just a quick update. gone back 3 times now for the under-heating of the engine issues. replaced t stat and engine coolant sensor and nogo. each time soon after cel comes on, i check to see if its the same number(p0126)and it is. so an engineer is coming next to have a shot at it.

I would bet that it's zero! Today's automotive companies have become more assemblers than manufacturers. QC is only as good as it is at the vendor level. The part can be installed properly but if it is defective, it will fail somewhere down the line.

Wow, just saw that this hasn't been resolved. Interesting.

Between both the ECTS and T-stat, I'm surprised it is still an issue. Possibly electrical at this point. Sorry you're having to deal with it.

thx heart. dealer called me yesterday and said that mazda has a couple other vehicles in my vin range that have the same issue. something about emissions and getting with the feds and working out some issues/processes to fix it. will be month to 2 months fix. they said in the mean time, drive the car,it wont hurt it. well.... i imparted my dislike on that whole idea as i just got a hair over 250 miles on a tank of gas (when it was new i was getting on the first one and second almost 430) and the fact that the raw gas thats not being burned is possilby washing down the cylinders and could effect the longevity of the vehice well after warranty. i was displeased with this outcome and i let the dealer know. they said let them check into some options and will let me know. dealer called today(service manager to be exact) and he told me mazda knows about this issue and as i have gone back to the dealer to try to work this out over this time(6 trips into town 60mi one way) that they see me as a valued customer(both the dealer and mazda) that mazda is going to take my car and trade out at no cost anyone i want. current or 2014 model.

now heres the sad part, and i dont want to bring anyone down. my wife was killed by a drunk driver here past thanksgiving week, and its been really hard for me. and the new car giving me issues hasnt helped. so mazda was told of my whole situation and they have jumped at the oppertunity to not only make it right but go the whole distance to make it perfect! i appreciate them for stepping up and going further to make me happy and give me a piece of mind knowing the new car(when it gets to this side) will be perfect. Thank You Mazda for helping me out and standing by your product and customer care practices. paul

Puddle,

My condolences for the loss of your wife. I am glad that Mazda is helping you in your tough time.

I understand all too well how it feels to lose someone that close due to the error of another driver... You have my sincere condolences as well.

It's great to hear that Mazda is doing their part to ensure that you're satisfied with your new vehicle. Best of luck and I hope that the new one proves to be rock-solid.

Paul,

Sorry for your loss and I'm sure all of us on mazdas247.com extend our sincere condolences. It is comforting to know that Mazda did the right thing. They did what a reputable company should have done with the problem to your CX-5. Every auto manufacturing company has issues but it is the way that they deal with them that separates them from the others and brings them to the top.

Pudde - Sorry about your loss. I lost a parent 4 years ago as the result of a negligent driver, sadly I understand.

Glad to hear that Mazda is treating you right with this engine issue.

UPDATE time.

it seems mazda has blown me off and not only isnt going to help me but i think stalled me long enough to have a fix made and passed the fed emissions board to get my car and others fixed with a new reflash. im so disappointed in all this that i dont know what to say or think. i will never buy another mazda again. first time and last time. i may be going oveboard or what not,but this is just another problem piled on with the death of my wife and the loss of my house. i appreciated everyone support here and i hope everyones cars run like a champ for years to come. Kiefer mazda has been great in all of this, its just mazda themselves has dropped the so called ball.

as i stated in another thread recently, all of the line and the 6's have this issue and they will issue a tsb for the reflash here soon.(got all this info from my dealer) again sorry for being a downer, just been depressed lately and i hoped this was going to be a bright side of recent events. take care, paul

Here's what I don't get about this issue Pudde, You've mentioned a couple of times that this ECU issue effects all CX-5s and the new 6 and yet no one else seems to be having the problem (except maybe the guy with the 2014 model who started another post and mentioned something about a coolant temp issue). In post #13 above, you stated that the dealer claims the problem only affects a few vehicles in/around your VIN range. I don't get a whole lot of consistency in what you're saying here. The type of problem you're talking about (one that requires an ECU reflash) is not uncommon, especially on a brand new model. Additionally, P0126 is a very common code on Miatas (particularly early NC models 2006-07) and owners have been known to drive them like that for thousands of miles without damage before getting around to changing out the thermostat, which solves the problem on that particular car. I know you've got a lot of personal stuff going on and this only adds to your grief, but an engine reflash is not the end of the world and it seems like you might be overreacting just a bit here and crying out "FIRE" in a crowded theatre. BTW, if this is as big a problem for you as you seem to believe, why didn't you take the dealer up on his offer to swap out your '13 for a '14?

as i said in the previous post..info on this issue was from service guy. i said to him i thought it was just here, and now your saying its an update/reflash for all cars? he said yes and i said..so not so rare of an issue. it wasnt a t stat/sensor issue. was the comp looking for a certain temp too soon of a time, so light comes on and result is engine not coming to operating temp. he said all 5's and the 6 weill be reflashed. needed or not in any area now. and updated as they are made. this is info from the dealer from mazda's engineering types.

as for trading cars, mazda does not want to do this now. between my finacers and the supposed loss of money from buying my car back to the extra cost of the new one, they dont want to take the loss. the loan people dont want to either. so not my choice there. the dealer was game for the swap, but was out of thier hands.

as as for FIRE in the theatre, NOT even close. just relaying what i was told. hey..if a tsb/reflash or what ever comes round one day, people can just pass on it,no biggie.
