Catless midpipe vs Catted midpipe???

ok well i got the obx headers and the race beat cat back a lot of people have been telling me if i want more power the go with a high flow cat is that true or no?

Intake would be better, but if you already have that then yes the midpipe is the next thing to change. However, I dunno... I didn't notice any changes really, but I don't have my header yet, but still. I dunno. Maybe 2 HP?

Have any of you looked at the stock midpipe lately?!!, that thing looks so restrictive. I got the headers, I got the axleback, and the stock resonator pipe doesn't even look that back performance wise. Plus my stock cat is going bad anyways. So yah its going to be loud, big deal. Just like deadgeneration said you just have to find the right exhaust combo

I have one sitting in my garage that I need to sell. I was actually surprised by how similar the stock and aftermarket pieces are. I think redneck posted a picture comparing the two. I think I just need headers now because otherwise it's restricted through the headers then opens up in the midpipe for about 2 feet then into the catback.

You got any clips of your OBX-Mazdaspeed combo??? I'd be very interested in hearing how it sounds.

I will try, I have never posted a video or a sound clip before. I could probably use my digital camera and then load it on to photobucket. I will give it a try. It won't be till later this week or next week though. I will also be pretty eager to put my MAM pipe on once I get my car back but I will try an do clip before so I can do a before and after compairason.

I have OBX, catted MAM and RB... sounds very nice and doesnt bug me on the highway. My buddy put a test pipe in place of his cat and it was VERY loud, and popped lots when u let off the gas

So I finally got around to installing my MAM catless midpipe and I will have to say with my setup(OBX headers, MAM midpipe, and P5 mazdaspeed axleback) it sounds like POO! Way to whiny honda sounding above 3,000 rpm. So I am going to get a Racing Beat axleback in hoping that it will give it a quieter, deeper, growly tone again. Any of you have this set up(racing beat axleback, catless midpipe, and headers) on a P5? If so how does it sound??

Here is a pic of the stock and MAM midpipes next to each other. The stock one is deffinately quite restricting:

haha bump from the dead...if i put on a catted midpipe like the one from protegegarage or sls, would it still sound loud and droney if i kept the stock exhaust manifold? i'd put a header in but i got the mazdaspeed exhaust and i heard it'll drone and sound like hell.

btw which cat usually goes bad? i cant remember whether it was the 1st or 2nd. i was thinking of replacing it wit a high flow cat or maybe a midpipe.

the first cat usually goes bad. i've seen them fail as early as 95,000 miles. its four to five times more expensive to replace the cat than to buy a header. there is no bolt in 'high flow' cat to replace this either. that kind of work would be custom and at that point you might as well just get a header.

if you run totally catless with the MS axle back that car will be loud. what you could do is run something like a Hushpower muffler/resonator in the midpipe to dampen noise at cruising speeds. i have used those and they work great,

They only reason mine was super loud was because of the Mazdaspeed P5 axleback. Since then I installed a Racing Beat MSP axleback and the sound is now amazing! I would recommend the Racing Beat MSP axleback, it involves some welding because you have to shorten the tip to fit on the P5 but way worth it.

lol >< i got the mazdaspeed p5 axleback. heh maybe in the future i'll get the racing beat one.

Yah, if you have a stock exhaust manifold and midpipe that exhaust is great in my opinion. But once you start adding aftermarket exhaust this axleback is to loud with a drone that will make you just about want to kill yourself.

They are constantly selling RB MSP axlebacks on ebay and on this site for great prices. I got mine off of ebay for $60 shipped

related question. I think my first cat is going bad. Would there be any benefit to adding the midpipe only and leaving the stock manifold and stock catback? I will probably upgrade to a catback later, but this will be done in pieces. Or, would it be cheaper to have a custom job done?

also, look at this. Would this bolt up to the stock manifold? I haven't really gotten under there to see the whole thing.
