Can We Still Trust Japanese Car Manufactures Especially on Safety and Reliability?

Keep in mind that Japanese industrial scandals aren't always as clear cut as they're made out to be. Remember the Carlos Ghosn/Nissan debacle? The symbiotic relationship between the government and large corporations really muddies the water in many of these incidents.

I read through the whole article and cannot decipher what the problem was exactly. Says 'certification testing' but what does that mean? Safety, mpg, etc. What were they certifing?

You can Google the web and there’re many reports from Japan with different stories. Basically they falsified test data to be used for safety and performance certifications. And it’s industry wide scandals in Japan. The government is still investigating.

Five Japanese vehicle makers report falsified tests

Toyota and Other Japanese Carmakers Say They Mishandled Safety Tests

Companies should be heavily fined. Most importantly, jail time should be dished. Someone consciously made the decision to falsify record. This person needs to be made example.

I've only read quickly, but apparently Deutsch Welle claims it only affects Japanese Domestic market:

The issue does not affect the non-Japanese market for Toyota. However, it is providing a stern test for Japanese car companies in their lucrative and symbolically important home market.

At the end of the day, the government does not do anything well, anything good. Take the FDA in the USA for example. Do they make sure your food is safe? No. Why do we have food borne problems still? HAHAHA! The safety comes from the wish to make money and not piss off customers who buy your product. I trust Mazda. Let's play a thought game and go with gm or Ford or VW for this "offense". I have had to deal with the Japanese culture here and there. Different, but easier when you know the expectations than Germans. Love Ya'll, but I think this is a click-bait issue. And one of you will reply to this "What does this have to do with food".

Well, the problem with the FDA is money. Their budget is way too low and so they have WAY too few inspectors. Now whether you wish to fund them or not is largely a political issue and I really don't want to go down that rathole.

Then I suggest you don't stake out a position here. Especially one that all bureaucracies fall back on when it becomes painfully obvious to everyone that they're incapable of performing their job. The answer is always "just throw more money at the problem".😣

Sure. No axe to grind. No going down the rathole here, sir. You are absolutely correct.
