caliper painting

2k3.5 p5 ftw!
i was asking my friend, whos a mechanic at a VW dearler, about painting my p5's calipers. he said it was a bad idea because it could lock the heat in and cause some brake warping.

anyone know about this 'theory'. i havn't seen anyone complain about problems with painted cal's but i thought i'd throw this out there for anyone considering it.

I've been considering painting my calipers for months and finally did it this weekend. Never heard anything negative about painting your calipers or how it will mess up your car. Just make sure that you paint the caliper only though. Other than that.... the only worry I have is that the yellow doesn't match my paint color. :D

I am no mechanic that is for damn sure. However the MSP calipers come painted stock so I doubt it's a mechanical or safety issue as long as you stay away from the pads and rotors.

Yeah, what Heathen said. If you buy Brembo brakes they come painted too, so... I don't know if the type of paint will have anything to do with it, but I've never heard about this overheating thing.

Yo, Snacks, what paint did you use?
I know it's hard to get a matching color for our yellow but I kind of like the lighter yellow I got from the G2 kit, it stands out more and I think if it was done in HZ color it would look more like just painted calipers - I say that because I was asked about my new brakes and I had to explain I just painted them.

dosle, are you thinking of painting yours too?

If this was an issue why did Porsche had their calipers painted for years?

Porsche's calipers are like twice the size of ours and get much hotter in every day conditions.

I had mine painted since like december and had no problems. I used the cheap ~$2-3 high temp. engine paint and it's still fine.

thanks, i guess he doesn't know everything! now if i could just find my hydraulic lift....

I used 900 degree Brake Caliper paint from Plastikoat. I bought it at Pep Boys. I've seen pictures of the peeps using yellow G2 and it looks tight. Mine looks similar to the G2 (it's just as light as the G2). One day...I was like "what the hell", went out and bought the first caliper paint I saw. I really wanted red though, but they ran out. Do you happen to know what you can clean your painted calipers with?? I think yellow will get dirty pretty easily.

I don't know if there's any truth to caliper painting being harfmful but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. Plus guys, stop kidding yourselves and do not compare porsche, brembo, amg, or any other high end brakes to our stock brakes... there is a BIG difference... and throwing some pep boys caliper paint on ours does not put them in the same league.

um... ok whatever, the brakes on the porsche g3 are further from g2 caliper painted protege brakes.

The comparsion is valid for the point being made in this thread. That being that having the caliper covered with paint will not sufficantly increase heat build up to the point of warping rotors as was being said.
The covering on Prosche brakes is not going to overally differ from paint being used with the G2.
Now yes the brake system on a Porsche has better cooling than ours, but not so much so to make a difference when it comes to painting.

also calipers can NOT warp.
Yes, but I think he meant that the calipers could overheat and warp the rotors. Anyway...

Haha, water, soap? :) It's just paint and it will get dirty with the same stuff that hits my car and wheels all the time so I'll just go with the regular wash, or some bug/tar remover if I get any of that stuff on it.

True, but since the issue is the dissipation of heat by the caliper does anyone know if/how these high end brakes like brembo have anything different to them that help with ventilation? Are the MSP brakes different from other Proteges?

Guess I took too long to post:rolleyes: , REmillers has already slapped some truth down.:D

g2 caliper paint... that's the way to go. It smoothens out so nice once it drys it doesn't look like a half assed job. I always get asked where did I buy my brakes :)

Is that all I am to you guys, a piece of meat!!?(boobs)

I'm taking my brain and shaking ass sigs elsewhere :D j/k

LOL you can take it elsewhere cause probably alot of us already saved it to our computers :)
